The Impact of Alpha‐Neurofeedback Training on Gastric Slow Wave Activity and Heart Rate Variability in Humans

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology &Motility, Volume 37, Issue 5, May 2025.
The duration of successful alpha band EGG‐Neurofeedback training of the LPIns demonstrated significant association with the EEG connectivity and HRV and did not show a negative correlation with Gastric Alimetry Rhythm Index as in the PVC training group.

Loneliness and social conformity: A predictive processing perspective

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, EarlyView.
Loneliness arises from a perceived lack of meaningful social connections, shaping both perception and behavior. While acute loneliness may promote social conformity as a means of reconnection, chronic loneliness can foster distrust, withdrawal, and non‐conformity.

Compassion‐focused chairwork for voice‐hearing relationships, body triggers and motivational states

open access: yesPsychology and Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose This paper aims to build on a recent theoretical and empirical review of CFT for psychosis by outlining a more detailed account of how voice‐hearing perceptions may be generated and triggered, and the implications for clinical practice.

Unravelling the Neurobiology of Interoceptive Inference

open access: yesTrends in Cognitive Sciences, 2020
What is the function of the insular cortex? Two recent studies (Gehrlach et al. and Livneh et al.) offer new insight into how this enigmatic brain region integrates interoception and exteroception in the service of emotion. The findings provide much needed causal evidence for the nascent theory of interoceptive inference.

Neurocardiology: translational advancements and potential

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 603, Issue 7, Page 1729-1779, 31 March 2025.
Abstract figure legend Afferent signalling pathways of the autonomic nervous system and their efferent targets in the heart, kidneys and vasculature. Abstract In our original white paper published in the The Journal of Physiology in 2016, we set out our knowledge of the structural and functional organization of cardiac autonomic control, how it ...

Enhancing interoceptive sensibility through exteroceptive–interoceptive sensory substitution

open access: yesScientific Reports
AbstractExploring a novel approach to mental health technology, this study illuminates the intricate interplay between exteroception (the perception of the external world), and interoception (the perception of the internal world). Drawing on principles of sensory substitution, we investigated how interoceptive signals, particularly respiration, could ...

Reduced sensory attenuation is related to aberrant interoceptive influences on intentional binding in schizophrenia

open access: yesPsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences Reports, Volume 4, Issue 2, June 2025.
We observed group differences in the level of sensory attenuation and the intentional binding effect, including the cardiac effect, as well as the association between them. These findings suggest a failure of interoceptive attenuation in schizophrenia.

Association Between Interoceptive Accuracy and Pain Perception: Insights From Trained Musicians and Athletes

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Pain, Volume 29, Issue 5, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Background The integration of concurrent endogenous and exogenous multisensory information throughout years of dedicated sensorimotor training is associated with enhanced interoceptive accuracy and altered pain perception in healthy individuals.

Interoception and panic disorder

open access: yesAdvances in Behaviour Research and Therapy, 1993
Abstract Somatic sensations are not only a core symptom of panic attacks, but they are also considered the primary trigger of the attacks according to recent psychological models. Studying interoception in panic disorder may help to specify situational factors of panic attacks and to explain why some people are more prone to panic attacks than others.

Validity Concerns About the Heartbeat Counting Task Extend to Alcohol Use disorder: Evidence From Subclinical and Clinical Samples

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 30, Issue 5, May 2025.
Interoception might play a role in addiction, but this assumption has only been tested using the widely criticised heartbeat counting task (HCT). We explored HCT validity in severe alcohol use disorder and binge drinking, through a classical/adapted HCT.
