Wind Observations of Suprathermal Electrons in the Interplanetary Medium

We review some of the new results for suprathermal electrons obtained with the 3-D Plasma and Energetic Particle Instrument on the WIND spacecraft, which provides high sensitivity electron and ion measurements from solar wind thermal plasma up to ≳ MeV energies.

Interaction of Comets with the Interplanetary Medium

The interaction of the solar wind and solar radiation with a comet, as the comet moves around the sun, is discussed. It is shown that the nature of this interaction is highly variable. It is also shown that the cometary neutrals play a dominant role in standing-off the solar wind, particularly during “quiet” conditions in the solar wind.

The interplanetary dust cloud is visible through its scattered light (the zodiacal light) at visible wavelengths. Brightness observations lead to equilibrium temperature and albedo of the particles and their variation as a function of the heliocentric distance. The light scattered by this optically thin medium is linearly polarized with negative values
