Plasmaspheric High‐Frequency Whistlers as a Candidate Cause of Shock Aurora at Earth

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
Auroral brightening driven by interplanetary shocks on Earth's closed magnetic field lines is commonly attributed to the 0.1–10 keV electron precipitations by electron cyclotron harmonic waves and whistler‐mode chorus waves in the low‐density region.

From Flybys to Sample Return: A Review of Space Probes and Robotic Sampling Technologies for Small Bodies

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As a crucial puzzle piece of deep space exploration, exploring small bodies can provide significant scientific insights and valuable mineral resources. Unlike missions to the Moon and Mars, small‐body missions pose distinct technical challenges, including communication delays, weak gravity, and uncertain environments. This paper reviews a full

On the role of interplanetary shocks in accelerating MeV electrons

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2023
Context. One of the sources of solar energetic particle (SEP) events is shocks that are driven by fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs). They can accelerate SEPs up to relativistic energies and are attributed to the largest SEP events. New studies suggest that CME-driven shocks can potentially accelerate electrons to MeV energies in the vicinity of the ...

Origin and formation of a chondritic xenolith in Krymka (LL3.2, breccia): Indications for a late formation of the accretionary breccia

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract An unusual chondritic xenolith was found in two sequentially prepared thin sections of a sample from the Krymka (LL3.2) chondrite. The xenolith has a rounded, slightly deformed shape of about 5 mm in apparent diameter and is partially surrounded by a double rim made of an inner fine‐grained silicate‐rich rim and an outer sulfide‐rich rim.

Characterization of the Transmission and Generation of Turbulence at Interplanetary Shocks

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We study the transmission and characteristics of turbulent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluctuations from upstream to downstream regions of interplanetary (IP) shocks using the linear mode decomposition (LMD) technique of G. P. Zank et al.

Spaceborne and spaceborn: Physiological aspects of pregnancy and birth during interplanetary flight

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Crewed interplanetary return missions that are on the planning horizon will take years, more than enough time for initiation and completion of a pregnancy. Pregnancy is viewed as a sequence of processes – fertilization, blastocyst formation, implantation, gastrulation, placentation, organogenesis, gross morphogenesis, birth and neonatal ...

Diffusion Coefficients of WIND/STICS Protons from Diffusive Shock Acceleration with Finite Escape Boundaries

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Heliospheric suprathermal ions include inner-source pickup ions, cometary ions, solar energetic particles, and suprathermal tail particles. Despite exhaustive observation and formalisms, their role in interplanetary shock acceleration has yet to be ...

Characteristics of Solar Wind Density Depletions During Solar Cycles 23 and 24 [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2017
Solar wind density depletions are phenomena that solar wind density is rapidly decreased and keep the state. They are generally believed to be caused by the interplanetary (IP) shocks.

Turbulence Upstream and Downstream of Interplanetary Shocks

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2021
The paper reviews the interaction of collisionless interplanetary (IP) shocks with the turbulent solar wind. The coexistence of shocks and turbulence plays an important role in understanding the acceleration of particles via Fermi acceleration mechanisms,

On the Formation of Super-Alfvénic Flows Downstream of Collisionless Shocks

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Super-Alfvénic jets, with kinetic energy densities significantly exceeding that of the solar wind, are commonly generated downstream of Earth's bow shock under both high- and low-beta plasma conditions. In this study, we present theoretical evidence that
