Plasma wave turbulence associated with an interplanetary shock
Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1979In this paper we give a brief summary of the interplanetary shocks detected and analyzed to date from the Helios 1 and 2 spacecraft and present a detailed analysis of the plasma wave turbulence associated with one particular shock, on March 30, 1976. This event was selected because a very clearly defined burst of plasma wave turbulence occurs at the ...

On the interaction of interplanetary shocks and solar wind turbulence
2021<p>The propagation of collisionless shocks through the turbulent magnetized plasmas has been investigated for decades. The processes connected with the formation and propagation of Interplanetary (IP) shocks play a key role in the acceleration of particles and in the coupling to the Earth&#8217;s magnetosphere.

Observations of Turbulence near Interplanetary Travelling Shocks
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005The observations on magnetic field fluctuations and suprathermal ion spectra near the shocks driven by the coronal mass ejections during the time periods of the Bastille Day 2000 event and the Halloween 2003 events are summarized.

On the scaling properties of anisotropy of interplanetary magnetic turbulent fluctuations
EPL (Europhysics Letters), 2010The anisotropic character of interplanetary magnetic-field turbulence has been studied through the analysis of Cluster data. The full tensor of the mixed second-order structure functions has been used to quatitatively measure the degree of anisotropy and its effect on small-scale turbulence.

Nonlocal plasma turbulence associated with interplanetary shocks
Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1982The plasma wave instrument on ISEE 3 has detected regions of plasma turbulence that extend several tenths of an astronomical unit upstream or downstream of inteplanetary shocks. The plasma waves fall into four categories. Highly impulsive 1‐ 10‐kHz electric field bursts were found hours upstream of quasi‐parallel interplanetary shocks.

Turbulence and Scintillations in the Interplanetary Plasma
Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1973The properties of the broadband fluctuations of the interplanetary plasma are discussed, taking into account observations in the vicinity of 1 AU heliocentric radius on space probes. Aspects of interplanetary scintillations and angular broadening as a probe of the solar wind are considered, giving attention to the 'thin-screen' approximation, a three ...

Turbulence properties associated with interplanetary shock waves
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2012We calculate the power spectral densities of magnetic field fluctuations associated with interplanetary shock waves, utilizing in-situ magnetic field measurements from spacecraft ACE and Wind at 1AU. We derive related quantities both upstream and downstream of a shock as a function of time/distance away from the shock passage.

Interplanetary plasma irregularities and ion acoustic turbulence
Physics Reports, 1990Abstract In this paper we discuss an effect of the ion acoustic turbulence on the inhomogeneous stucture of complementary ionized interplanetary and interstellar plasmas. These media are practically collisionless and their irregularities are of scales (along the magnetic field lines) much smaller than the mean free path of the electrons. However, the

Dissipation of interplanetary turbulence by pick-up ions
Advances in Space Research, 1997Abstract The interaction of MHD waves with pick-up ions in the outer heliosphere is considered. The transport equation for wave energy density describes non-linear wave interaction and wave dissipation due to the resonant interaction with pick-up ions.

Magnetic field strength distribution in interplanetary turbulence
Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2000The distribution of magnetic field magnitudes is derived for the special case of a constant mean field and uncorrelated components having Gaussian distributions. Of the three cases considered (isotropic, transverse, and axisymmetric) the latter most closely resembles a lognormal distribution when the parallel variance is less than the perpendicular ...
