Interspecific variation of isthmo-optic projections in poikilothermic vertebrates

Brain Research, 1994
Retinopetal projections from isthmic and caudal mesencephalic regions were studied in a number of poikilothermic vertebrates. The tested animals were elasmobranchs, bony fishes, amphibians, and reptiles. Isthmo-optic projections were absent in elasmobranchs, sturgeons, most teleosts, all anuran and urodel amphibians, and in anolis lizards.

Intra‐ and interspecific variation in macaque molar enamel thickness

American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 2014
ABSTRACTEnamel thickness has played an important role in studies of primate taxonomy, phylogeny, and functional morphology, although its variation among hominins is poorly understood. Macaques parallel hominins in their widespread geographic distribution, relative range of body sizes, and radiation during the last five million years.

Interspecific variation in products of animal mitochondrial protein synthesis

Nature, 1976
THE DNA of mammalian mitochondria (mtDNA) exists as a single class of circular molecules about 5 µm long1,2, and codes for two ribosomal RNA species and several transfer (4S) RNA components3,4. The function of the remaining 80% of the genome is unknown, although it has been suggested that the residual coding capacity provides messenger RNA (mRNA) which

Interspecific variation of Δ1,6-piperideines in imported fire ants

Toxicon, 2010
Delta(1,6)-piperideines have been recently reported in the venom of the red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren and the black imported fire ants, Solenopsis richteri Forel. However, they have never been quantified in either species. Furthermore, there is no information available about those piperideines in the hybrid imported fire ants (S ...

Intra- and interspecific genome-size variation in the Salmonidae

Cytogenetic and Genome Research, 1992
The nuclear DNA contents of 22 salmonid taxa, estimated primarily by flow-cytometric analysis relative to a chicken internal standard, were evaluated to compare intra- and interspecific variation in DNA content within this fish family. The average variability within taxa exceeded that among taxa. Intraspecific genome-size variation was substantial and,

Laterality in detour behaviour: interspecific variation in poeciliid fish

Animal Behaviour, 1997
We measured whether males of five species of poeciliid fish made detours to the right or left of a vertical-bar obstacle in order to approach a group of females. Three of these species, Gambusia holbrookiGambusia nicaraguensis and Poecilia reticulata showed a significant bias to the left, whereas Brachyrhaphis roseni and Girardinus falcatus showed a ...

Peroxidase Isoenzyme Variation in Interspecific Elm Hybrids

Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 1972
Analysis of peroxidase isoenzymes in interspecific elm hybrids indicated that a close correlation exists between parental isoenzymes and those of the progeny. In some crosses, isoenzymes undergo mendelian segregation while in others segregation distortion is evident.

Studies on variation in interspecific hybrids of Saccharum

Sugar Tech, 2010
The extent and pattern of variation were studied in the seven crosses of F1 population of improved S. officinarum x Interspecific hybrids of Saccharum involving one cultivated S. barberi and two wild species S. spontaneum and S. robustum. The study revealed the superiority of all the crosses for cane population and presence of substantial variability ...

Interspecific variation of diterpene composition ofCubitermes soldier defense secretions

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 1984
Soldiers of the humivorous termite generaCubitermes andCrenetermes (Isoptera: Termitidae: Termitinae) secrete a mixture of unusual diterpene hydrocarbons from the fontanellar opening of the frontal gland. The defense secretions of sixCubitermes species and oneCrenetermes species show species-specific distributions of the five chemically identified ...

Interspecific allozyme variation within the fungal genus Pleurotus

Transactions of the British Mycological Society, 1988
Sixty isolates of Pleurotus spp., collected from world-side sources, were examined for interspecific allozyme variation by horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis and standard histochemical staining. Interspecific variation was recorded for only those enzymes which revealed little or no intraspecific variation.
