SKA studies of atomic gas in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way

New Astronomy Reviews, 2004
Abstract The λ21-cm line is an excellent tracer of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM). Atomic hydrogen (H I ) is found in a variety of environments, from dense clouds to the diffuse galactic halo, and its filling factor is often high, so structures with sizes over a wide range of scales can be mapped with this line.

Gas phase chemistry of pyrene and related cations with molecules and atoms of interstellar interest

International Journal of Mass Spectrometry, 1999
AbstractThe chemistry of the pyrene radical cation C 16 H 101 and its derivatives C 16 H 91 and C 16 H 111 has been investigated in the gasphase using a flowing afterglow-selected ion flow tube. Rate coefficients have been determined for reactions between C 16 H n1 (n 5 9, 10, 11) and H 2 , CO, H 2 O, and NH 3 molecules as well as H, O, and N atoms. These

The Cool Phase of the Interstellar Medium: Atomic Gas

1990
The purpose of this review is to discuss high resolution Hi observations of a sample of nearby galaxies and to explain what they can teach us about the composition, structure and energy balance of the Interstellar Medium or ISM. The first part presents a summary of what is known about the ISM of the Galaxy and is followed by an overview of the current ...

Theoretical investigation on reactions involving electronically-excited atoms occurring in the gas phase of extraterrestrial environments and at the surface of interstellar icy grains

Over the last decade, there has been an important advance in the comprehension of the formation and destruction routes of the most common interstellar chemical species. However, a significant lack of knowledge concerning the chemistry of other minor species is still present, often due to the limited amount of computational and experimental data.
