The Hermean Helium Exosphere—Continuous and Sporadic Helium Release Processes

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 4, April 2025.
Abstract Since its detection by Mariner 10, helium has been a key focus in studies of Mercury's exosphere. Recently, Weichbold et al. (2025), https://doi.org/10.1029/2024je008679 provided the first in situ helium measurements, inferring density from Ion Cyclotron Wave (ICW) events observed by the MESSENGER spacecraft.

Interstellar H2 toward HD 37903

open access: yes, 2011
We present an analysis of interstellar H2 toward HD 37903, which is a hot, B 1.5 V star located in the NGC 2023 reflection nebula. Meyer et al. (2001) have used a rich spectrum of vibrationally excited H2 observed by the HST to calculate a model of the ...

Mapping Our Path through the Local Interstellar Medium: High-resolution Ultraviolet Absorption Spectroscopy of Sight Lines along the Sun’s Historical Trajectory

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Using high-resolution UV data obtained from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope, we focus on eight sight lines along the Sun’s historical trajectory to reconstruct the morphology of our most recent interstellar ...

The Determination of Electron Abundances in Interstellar Clouds [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1979
A new method for estimating electron fractions in shielded molecular clouds is proposed on the basis of gas phase ion-molecule reactions which involves measuring the quantity . Applied to existing data, it yields upper limits to Xe in the range from 10−8 to 10−7 for a variety of clouds, warm as well as cool.

Recent developments and applications of selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT‐MS)

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, Volume 44, Issue 2, Page 101-134, March/April 2025.
Abstract Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT‐MS) is now recognized as the most versatile analytical technique for the identification and quantification of trace gases down to the parts‐per‐trillion by volume, pptv, range. This statement is supported by the wide reach of its applications, from real‐time analysis, obviating sample collection ...

Boron abundances in diffuse interstellar clouds [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2009
AbstractWe present a comprehensive survey of B abundances in diffuse interstellar clouds from HST/STIS observations along 56 Galactic sight lines. Our sample is the result of a complete search of archival STIS data for the B II λ1362 resonance line, with each detection confirmed by the presence of absorption from other dominant ions at the same ...

Advances on the Links Between Turbulent and Submeso‐ to Mesoscales During EUREC4A

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 12, Issue 2, February 2025.
Abstract Turbulent processes in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) are parameterized in numerical weather prediction and climate models. Better understanding their modulation by larger‐scale organized structures, some of them being represented explicitly, is thus of great interest.

XMM‐Newton Observations of the Peculiar Be X‐Ray Binary A0538‐66

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 346, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT A0538‐66 is a neutron star/Be x‐ray binary located in the Large Magellanic Cloud and, since its discovery in the 70s, it showed a peculiar behavior that makes it a unique object in the high‐mass x‐ray binaries scene: the extremely eccentric orbit (e=0.72$$ e=0.72 $$), the short spin period of the neutron star (P=69$$ P=69 $$ ms), the episodes ...

The interstellar cloud surrounding the Sun: a new perspective

open access: yes, 2014
Aims: We offer a new, simpler picture of the local interstellar medium, made of a single continuous cloud enveloping the Sun. This new outlook enables the description of a diffuse cloud from within and brings to light some unexpected properties. Methods:

A Reanalysis of the Carbon Abundance in the Translucent Cloud toward HD 24534 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We have reanalyzed the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph data set presented by Snow et al. which contains the interstellar intersystem C II] 2325A line through the translucent cloud toward HD 24534 (X Persei). In contrast to the results of Snow et al.,
