Interstellar Polarization and Magnetic Fields

1987
Since the work of Davis and Greenstein, polarization of starlight is quite generally considered as one of the most spectacular manifestation of the presence of magnetic fields in the interstellar space. If polarization measurements are qualitatively able to indicate the general pattern of the magnetic fields, a quantitative analysis seems more ...

Zeeman Effect Determines Interstellar Magnetic Fields

Physics Today, 1968
The first direct measurement of the interstellar magnetic field in our galaxy has raised the question of why the field is stronger in other spiral arms than it is in our own. Despite its limitations he data give theorists new parameters for the frequently invoked role of magnetic fields in galactic dynamics and stellar evolution.

Measurement of the Interstellar Magnetic Field

Nature, 1968
The discovery of linear polarization of the radio emission from the pulsating radio stars1 provides an opportunity for the first direct measurement of the average magnetic field over distances of up to 100 pc from the Sun. It has already been shown2,3 that the frequency dispersion in arrival time of the pulses can be entirely explained by a dispersion ...

Measurement of Magnetic Fields in Interstellar Clouds

Nature, 1962
A new and successful attempt to measure magnetic fields in the Milky Way using the 250-ft radio telescope at Jodrell Bank is reported. The measurements were made by observing the Zeeman splitting of the neutral hydrogen line profiles. The strongest indication of Zeeman splitting was shown by the narrow deep feature of Taurus A.

Interstellar Magnetic Fields — Past, Present and Future

1987
Interstellar magnetic fields have become popular in astrophysics in recent years, stimulated by a significant improvement of the observational techniques in the radio and optical range and a refinement of theoretical models. It now seems promising to attack the question of the origin of magnetic fields and their influence on the dynamics of the ...
