Complex Organic Interstellar Molecules
Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2009Of the over 150 different molecular species detected in the interstellar and circumstellar media, approximately 50 contain 6 or more atoms. These molecules, labeled complex by astronomers if not by chemists, all contain the element carbon and so can be called organic. In the interstellar medium, complex molecules are detected in the denser sources only.

We propose that photocycloaddition reactions in molecular complexes in normal interstellar clouds will create unusually large molecules. These may be sufficiently radiation stable to be circulated with the interstellar gas, and so provide convenient nucleation centres for growth of loosely bound grains in dark regions.

Molecules in Interstellar Clouds
1981The physical and chemical state of interstellar clouds is reviewed, including recent investigations at the Onsala Space Observatory. The Orion A region is chosen as an example of a “giant” molecular cloud and hence a formation site for massive stars. The Taurus Molecular Clouds, in contrast, may be the future birthplace of solar-type stars.

Interstellar Molecules and Interstellar Chemistry
1986Radio astronomers have to date detected some 60 or so molecules in interstellar space. These molecules have been identified, in the majority of cases, by recording the microwave spectrum received by radio telescope from an interstellar or circumstellar dust cloud and comparing it with the spectra produced in laboratory experiments.
