Spontaneous enteric nervous system activity generates contractile patterns prior to maturation of gastrointestinal motility

Spontaneous neuronal network activity is critical for circuit maturation, yet whether this is a feature of enteric nervous system development has yet to be established. Here, we identify clustered ripples, a previously undescribed form of neurogenic gastrointestinal motility that shares many features with spontaneous neuronal networks in other systems.

Diabetic gastroenteropathy: Associations between gastrointestinal symptoms, motility, and extraintestinal autonomic measures

We found no associations between gastrointestinal and extraintestinal measures of diabetic autonomic neuropathy. Nonetheless, gastrointestinal symptoms increased with the severity of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy and were associated with gastrointestinal measures.

Smooth Muscle Mechanosensitivity Generates and Maintains Pressure Gradients Across the Intestine

Mechanosensitivity of the smooth muscle induces a positive‐feedback loop that spontaneously generates pressure gradients across gut segments and stabilizes initially applied pressure gradients. It can act jointly or compete with the pressure gradient induced by directional peristaltic waves.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Gastric Motility in Conscious Rats

By training rats to remain awake inside an MRI scanner, we can now noninvasively scan their gastrointestinal tracts without using anesthesia. This allows us to assess gastric motility and emptying in conscious rats without the various confounding effects that anesthesia might cause.
