Life Cycle Environmental Impacts and Socio‐Economic Implications of Tidal Electricity Generation and Storage in the UK

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, Volume 10, Issue 6, June 2026.
If tidal electricity generation and storage replaced natural gas and battery storage by 2050, it could reduce the climate change impact of UK grid electricity by 71%, saving up to 4.4 Mt CO2 eq./y. Most other environmental impacts would be reduced by up to 24%. However, high costs and low public acceptability hinder its deployment. ABSTRACT Tidal range

The environmental and photo-physiological control of microphytobenthos primary production on an intertidal mudflat

open access: yes, 2000
Microphytobenthos are important primary producers on tidal flats - ecosystems which are characterised by steep physical and chemical gradients. In this study some of the environmental factors that control the distribution and primary production of ...

The Status, Challenges and Sustainable Development of the Abalone Industry in China

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT China has abundant abalone resources and a long history of abalone consumption. Abalone aquaculture is an important economic and social activity in China's coastal provinces. Exploring the lichenization continuum through the marine tripartite symbiosis of Collemopsidium pelvetiae

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 113, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Premise Symbioses between lichen‐forming fungi and brown algae (phaeophytes) are extremely rare. We investigated the interactions between the marine fungus Collemopsidium pelvetiae and its two photosynthetic partners, the brown alga Pelvetia canaliculata and a cyanobacterial symbiont to address questions on symbiosis biology, lichenization ...

Fish passage at intertidal obstructions: approaches in Washington State

open access: yes, 2018
Washington State has an active fish passage barrier correction program, with millions of dollars spent annually on fish passage barrier remediation. Tidal water crossing structures, including culverts, bridges, tidegates and control structures pose a ...

A review of the historic and present ecological role of aquatic and shoreline wood, from forest to deep sea

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1091-1119, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The ecology of forests, their losses, and terrestrial wood decomposition dynamics have been intensively studied and reviewed. In the aquatic realm, reviews have concentrated on large wood (LW) in rivers and the transition from freshwater to marine environments in the Pacific Northwest of North America. However, a comprehensive global synthesis
