Migrations and dynamics of the intertropical convergence zone
Nature, 2014Rainfall on Earth is most intense in the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), a narrow belt of clouds centred on average around six degrees north of the Equator. The mean position of the ITCZ north of the Equator arises primarily because the Atlantic Ocean transports energy northward across the Equator, rendering the Northern Hemisphere warmer than ...

The Intertropical Convergence Zone
2013The Intertropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, is a belt of wind convergence and associated convection encircling the globe in the near-equatorial region. In a zonally averaged view, it is located at the equatorward edge – the rising branch – of the Hadley cell.

Hysteresis of the intertropical convergence zone to CO2 forcing
Nature Climate Change, 2021With the unprecedented rate of global warming in recent decades, whether or not anthropogenic climate change is irreversible is an important question. Based on idealized CO2 ramp-up until 1,468 ppm and symmetric ramp-down model experiments, here we show that the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) does not respond linearly to CO2 forcing, but ...

Preferred Latitudes of the Intertropical Convergence Zone
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1994The latitude preference of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is examined on the basis of observations, theory, and a modeling analysis. Observations show that convection is enhanced at latitudes of about 4 deg to 10 deg relative to the equator, even in regions where the sea surface temperature (SST) is maximum on the equator.

Southward Migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone Through the Holocene
Science, 2001Titanium and iron concentration data from the anoxic Cariaco Basin, off the Venezuelan coast, can be used to infer variations in the hydrological cycle over northern South America during the past 14,000 years with subdecadal resolution. Following a dry Younger Dryas, a period of increased precipitation and riverine discharge occurred during the ...

An Objective Method for the Identification of the Intertropical Convergence Zone
Journal of Climate, 1990A simple objective method for delineation of the ITCZ from daily 2.5 degree data on satellite measured outgoing longwave radiation and albedo is described. The method involves identification of grid points with a large fraction of deep convective clouds by imposition of a bispectral threshold and subsequent filtering to retain organized large-scale ...

A Dynamical Model of the Intertropical Convergence Zone
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1973Abstract A tropical-wave, zonal-flow interaction model is used to test the hypothesis that through the CISK process the “critical-latitude mechanism” (mass convergence in the tropical planetary boundary layer tends to concentrate around the latitude where the Coriolis frequency equals the wave frequency) is responsible for the development of the ITCZ ...

Convective Forcing in the Intertropical Convergence Zone of the Eastern Pacific
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2003One of the goals of the East Pacific Investigation of Climate, year 2001 process study (EPIC2001), was to understand the mechanisms controlling the forcing of deep atmospheric convection over the tropical eastern Pacific. An intensive study was made of convection in a 4 degrees x 4 degrees square centered on 10 degrees N, 95 degrees W in September and ...
