Intestinal ischemia - the basics
Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery, 1999In this review the physiology of the intestinal circulation of importance for the understanding of intestinal ischemia is briefly outlined. The potential threat of massive intestinal vasoconstriction causing nonocclusive intestinal ischemia is discussed, as is the clinical importance of the reperfusion component of the ischemic injury.

Intestinal Ischemia in the Elderly
Gastroenterology Clinics of North America, 2009Mesenteric ischemia in the elderly is an uncommon but often fatal disorder for which the prognosis depends entirely on the speed and accuracy of the diagnosis. A high index of suspicion is required as the early signs and symptoms, at a time when ischemic changes are reversible, are typically nonspecific or absent.

Diagnostic Tests for Intestinal Ischemia
Surgical Clinics of North America, 1992Mesenteric ischemia is a devastating disease. Without early diagnosis and intervention, the process proceeds to intestinal gangrene with its associated high morbidity and mortality rates. Although newer operative techniques and better intensive care unit management may improve patient outcome, it is only by obtaining an earlier diagnosis that greater ...

Intestinal Ischemia in the Newborn: The Role of Intestinal Maturation
Journal of Surgical Research, 1993Premature infants are susceptible to intestinal ischemia during the newborn period when their intestinal tracts are functionally and structurally immature. Studies have shown that exogenous glucocorticoids hasten intestinal maturation. We investigated the effects of hydrocortisone on platelet activating factor (PAF)-induced intestinal ischemia in the ...

Myocardial effects of intestinal ischemia
Journal of Surgical Research, 1969IRREVERSIBLE HEMORRHAGIC SHOCK in the dog is clearly related to intestinal ischemia [7]. Because of the emphasis on irreversibility, other investigators, focusing on the late stages of this situation, have overlooked early systemic changes directly related to the diminished splanchnic blood flow.

Reperfusion Injury after Intestinal Ischemia
Digestive Surgery, 1993Postischemic intestinal tissue damage is induced at least partly by the enhanced formation of oxygen radicals. The initial source of oxygen radicals is the hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase system. Oxygen radicals react directly with polyunsaturated fatty acids leading to lipid peroxidation within the cell membranes.

Intestinal ischemia and necrotizing enterocolitis
The Journal of Pediatrics, 1990Early descriptions of necrotizing enterocolitis noted histologic evidence of ischemia in affected intestine and colon. This observation led to the hypothesis that intestinal ischemia played a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of NEC, 1 an hypothesis still widely held, although not yet proved in any definitive manner.

The Evaluation and Management of Intestinal Ischemia
NEJM EvidenceAbstractIntestinal ischemia can result from various pathologic conditions. The presentations of ischemia can range from acute to subacute and mild to severe. Diagnosis of this condition may pose challenges, particularly in the early, potentially salvageable, stages of disease. This review offers an evidence-based approach to understanding the diagnosis

Exercise-associated Intestinal Ischemia
Current Sports Medicine Reports, 2005Ischemic bowel disease exhibits a complex spectrum of clinical presentations and in the athlete the disease may be superimposed on dehydration, hyperthermia, and exhaustion. Physicians caring for athletes should be aware of the manifestations of ischemic bowel disease and the optimum methods of diagnosis and treatment.
