The Intracluster Medium

1992
Clusters of galaxies are full of hot, diffuse plasma, with typical temperatures and electron densities of T ~ 7x107 K and n e ~ 10-3 cm-3, This intraclustermedium (ICM) produces copious X-ray emission, and typical cluster X-ray luminositiesare L x ~ 1043 - 1045 ergs s-1.

Imaging the Hot Intracluster Medium

1992
Clusters of galaxies contain large amounts of hot, diffuse x—ray emitting gas. Observations of this gas can be used to measure the gas mass, the cluster virial mass, and the cluster morphology. From these measurements. a lower limit to the baryonic mass in clusters, the formation efficiency of galaxies in different environments, and the presence and ...

Evolution of Clusters and the Intracluster Medium

1993
I review observations and theoretical models of evolution of gas in clusters of galaxies. The mass of hot gas is an important component of clusters of galaxies, equalling or exceeding the total mass in galaxies in most clusters. The hot gas also traces the gravitational potential of the cluster, giving better measurements of the total mass of a cluster
