Seismic Hazard Studies in the U.K.: Source Specification Problems of Intraplate Seismicity
Natural Hazards, 1997Although the U.K. is in an area of only low to moderate seismicity, the seismic hazard is sufficient to pose a threat to sensitive structures such as chemical plants and nuclear facilities. In quantifying the level of hazard by conventional probabilistic methodology, however, some problems arise in attempting to interpret earthquake data in terms of ...

Migration of seismic activity along intraplate seismic belts in the Japanese Islands
Tectonophysics, 1988Abstract Migration of seismic activity after eight large earthquakes which occurred in and near Japan is investigated. It is found that migration velocities are in most cases in the range between several km/yr and 100 km/yr. However, in some cases, seismic activity in the regions more than a few hundred kilometers distant from the focal regions of ...

Some aspects of viscous stress relaxation and intraplate seismicity
Tectonophysics, 1982Abstract Considerable evidence suggests that the lithosphere has a Maxwellian rheology with an effective viscosity of 1026 poise or less. In a Maxwellian lithosphere viscous stress dissipation limits the maximum attainable stresses (due to mechanisms providing a constant stress buildup) to a value σmax given by the product of stress buildup rate ...

This aim of this manuscript is to work towards a better estimate of seismic hazard in an intraplate region. To this end, two approaches are used. The first, an observational approach, uses a simplified model of wave propagation in order to determine regional and local geophysical characteristics that determine seismic hazard.
