Hydroseismicity—A hypothesis for the role of water in the generation of intraplate seismicity

Geology, 1987
Abstract A new hypothesis termed Hydroseismicity that has hydrologic (diffusion of pore pressure transients from recharge areas of groundwater basins), geologic (rifted, fractured crust), and chemical (solubility of minerals) elements is proposed to explain the role of water in the generation of intraplate seismicity.

Quantitative Impact of Structural Inheritance on Present-Day Deformation and Seismicity Concentration in Intraplate Deformation Zones

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Science Letters, 2019
International audienceStructural inheritance (i.e. paleo-tectonic) areas, acting as weakened domains, appear to be a key element localizing the seismicity in intraplate deformation zones.

Recurrent Intraplate Tectonism in the New Madrid Seismic Zone

Science, 1980
For the first time, New Madrid seismicity can be linked to specific structural features that have been reactivated through geologic time. Extensive seismic reflection profiling reveals major faults coincident with the main earthquake trends in the area and with structural deformation apparently caused by repeated episodes of igneous activity.

OCEANIC INTRAPLATE SEISMICITY

Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, 1983
The occurrence of seismicity at the surface of the globe largely along preferential lines, now recognized as mid-oceanic ridges and subduction zones, was key evidence for the development of the theory of plate tectonics in the 1960s. Indeed, many plate boundaries, especially some of the southern, less accessible ridges, were drawn, at least initially ...

Lithospheric strength and intraplate seismicity in the New Madrid seismic zone

Tectonics, 1997
A simple hypothesis is proposed to explain the occurrence of localized zones of tectonic deformation and seismicity within intraplate regions subjected to relatively uniform far‐field tectonic stresses. In most intraplate regions (especially continental shield areas and old oceanic basins), temperatures in the lower crust and upper

Structural Controls on Localized Intraplate Deformation and Seismicity in Southern Australia: Insights From Local Earthquake Tomography of the Flinders Ranges

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2013
Data from an array of 24 seismometers are used to image the crust beneath the Flinders Ranges, southeast Australia, with the goal of improving our understanding of crustal structure, rheology, and the mechanism responsible for the localized intraplate ...

Challenges in assessing seismic hazard in intraplate Europe

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2015
Abstract Intraplate seismicity is often characterized by episodic, clustered and migrating earthquakes and extended after-shock sequences. Can these observations – primarily from North America, China and Australia – usefully be applied to seismic hazard assessment for intraplate Europe?

Intraplate Seismicity, Hydroseismicity, and Predictions in Hindsight

Seismological Research Letters, 2008
Intraplate earthquakes are characterized by spatially isolated regions of persistent, diffuse earthquake activity with no general correlation with mapped surface geology. Various models have been proposed for their origin, but there has been no widely accepted explanation.

Intraplate seismicity of antarctica and tectonic implications

Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 1981
Abstract We present a comprehensive study of the seismicity of the Antarctic plate for the period 1925–1980. The total seismic energy released during this period in the interior of the plate, 3.2 × 1022 ergs, is compared to figures for the African plate, of similar kinematics and size, and to the neighboring Nazca plate.

INFLUENCE OF GEOTHERMAL REGIME ON INTRAPLATE SEISMICITY IN BRAZIL

1st International Congress of the Brazilian Geophysical Society, 1989
Recent compilatians of geothermal and seismic data have been used in studying the nature of intraplate seismicity in two regions in Brazil: the northeastem region canprising the states of Ceara, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Alagoas ,and northern Bahia and the southern region restricted to the state of Sao Paulo.
