Seasonal and intraseasonal oscillations in a monsoonal estuary

2023
Estuaries on the Indian subcontinent are influenced by the Asian Summer Monsoon and show strong seasonality. As a result, these estuaries are often referred to as monsoonal estuaries (Vijith et al., 2009).  The seasonal cycle is superposed with intra-seasonal oscillations (ISO) with periods ranging from 10 to 90 days.

Seasonal Variations of Tropical Intraseasonal Oscillations

2013
This study has investigated whether the monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (MISO) and Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) are same or different over the Indo-Pacific tropical region. The results are based on observational analysis with high-resolution diabatic heating as central to all the mechanisms discussed and atmospheric general circulation model ...

On the Dynamics of Intraseasonal Oscillations and ENSO

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1988
This paper investigates some basic properties of low-frequency phenomena in the tropical atmosphere and the coupled ocean-atmosphere system, with an aim of seeking a unified dynamical framework for studies of the mechanisms of intraseasonal oscillations and the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The role of specific processes leading to intraseasonal

Stochastic Forcing of ENSO by the Intraseasonal Oscillation

Journal of Climate, 1999
Abstract Using the ideas of generalized linear stability theory, the authors examine the potential role that tropical variability on synoptic–intraseasonal timescales can play in controlling variability on seasonal–interannual timescales. These ideas are investigated using an intermediate coupled ocean–atmosphere model of the El Nino–Southern ...

Tropical Intraseasonal Oscillations in a Simple Nonlinear Model

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1993
Abstract This study examines two possible mechanisms responsible for the selection of the preferred period of the Madden and Julian (40–50 day) oscillation. A global two-level nonlinear model with a positive-only CISK-type cumulus heating parameterization is used to simulate the oscillation, which appears when the SST exceeds a critical value for ...

Intraseasonal interaction between the Madden–Julian Oscillation and the North Atlantic Oscillation

Nature, 2008
Bridging the traditional gap between the spatio-temporal scales of weather and climate is a significant challenge facing the atmospheric community. In particular, progress in both medium-range and seasonal-to-interannual climate prediction relies on our understanding of recurrent weather patterns and the identification of specific causes responsible ...

Remotely Forced Intraseasonal Oscillations over the Tropical Atlantic

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1993
Abstract Intraseasonal (20–70 day) variability is examined in the Atlantic region during Northern Hemisphere winter using ECMWF analyses and NOAA outgoing longwave radiation (OLR). It is found that the dominant 200-mb zonal-wind fluctuation over the tropical Atlantic, A1, is related to global-scale circulation anomalies with their origins in the ...
