The intraseasonal variability of winter semester surface air temperature in Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yesPolar Research, 2011
This study investigates systematically the intraseasonal variability of surface air temperature over Antarctica by applying empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis to the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, US Department of Energy ...

Mean Biases Dominate CMIP6 Model Deficiencies in Simulating Heavy Rainfall During Monsoon Intraseasonal Oscillation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract The monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (MISO) modulates heavy precipitation during the Indian summer monsoon, but accurate rainfall simulation remains a challenge in state‐of‐the‐art models. Our analysis reveals a moisture bias in MISO using simulations from the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project models.

Extended-range prediction of a heat wave event over the Yangtze River Valley: role of intraseasonal signals

open access: yesAtmospheric and Oceanic Science Letters, 2019
The authors previous study reported the important role of extratropical intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) on the occurrence of a typical heatwave event over the Yangtze River Valley.

Projected Earlier Australian Summer Monsoon Onset Associated With Faster Eastward MJO Propagation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract The response of the Australian Summer Monsoon (AUSM) onset to global warming remains a critical and unresolved question. Here, using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) multi‐model simulations under the SSP5‐8.5 scenario, we project a robust earlier onset by about 5 days by the late 21st century.

A Precipitation-Based Index for Tropical Intraseasonal Oscillations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2020
AbstractCharacteristic patterns of precipitation-associated tropical intraseasonal oscillations, including the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO), are identified using local empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation data as a function of ...

Physics‐Constrained Network for Enhanced Extended‐Range Precipitation Forecasting in East Asia

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract The complex summer weather in East Asia poses significant challenges of precipitation forecasting. Despite the promising capabilities of deep learning models in conventional forecasting tasks, their black‐box nature limits physical interpretability.

Distinct Dominant Intraseasonal Oscillation Modes Modulate South China's Persistent Extreme Precipitation in Rainy Season

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract This study investigates mechanisms by which distinct intraseasonal oscillation modes drive regional persistent extreme precipitation events over South China during the rainy season. Based on periodic characteristics of 54 such events, two dominant modes are identified: 12–20‐day (type‐1) and 25–50‐day (type‐2) oscillations. Although comparable

Different Responses of the Madden‐Julian Oscillation to the Fast and Slow Decaying El Niño in Spring

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the modulation of the Madden‐Julian Oscillation (MJO) by El Niño during decaying springs, using reanalysis data. El Niño events are categorized into fast‐decaying (FD) and slow‐decaying (SD) types based on their decaying rate.

Hemispheric Synoptic Patterns Control Rainfall and Long‐Range Aerosol Transport in the Amazon

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract The transatlantic transport of dust and smoke aerosols from Africa to South America is a large‐scale, year‐round process that affects atmospheric and nutrient cycling in the Amazon rainforest. We analyze daily variations in black carbon at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) to investigate how Atlantic synoptic‐scale meteorology ...

The Effect of Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation on Evaporation Duct and Electromagnetic Propagation over the South China Sea

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2020
Intraseasonal oscillation of the evaporation duct, lasting 30–60 days, has been identified over the South China Sea (SCS) summer monsoon region based on multiple reanalyses and observational data.
