Release of copper from copper-bearing intrauterine contraceptive devices. [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ, 1977
We measured the rate of release from copper-bearing intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) with varying copper surface areas. Over 135 days of observation the release rate decreased exponentially. This decrease in the release rate was associated with the deposition of a protein layer on the surface of the metal. The bioavailability of copper on IUDs

Strategies for improving the acceptability and acceptance of the copper intrauterine device [PDF]

open access: yesCochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2012
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are highly effective and are the most widely used reversible contraceptive method in the world. However, in developed countries IUDs are among the least common methods of contraception used. We evaluated the effect of interventions to increase uptake of the copper IUD, a long-acting, reversible contraceptive method. To ...

Foetal Mummification in Pregnant Dairy Cows Induces Variant Changes on the Hormonal Profile, Biochemical Parameters and Mineral Profile of the Dam

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 3, May 2025.
A comprehensive investigation was conducted on the hormonal, biochemical, liver, kidney and mineral profiles of pregnant cows carrying mummified foetuses. The results showed a significant increase in glucose, albumin, triglycerides, cholesterol, globulin, total protein, urea, AST, ALP, bilirubin, iron and potassium in cows carrying mummified foetuses ...

Injectable Contraceptives Differentially Affect Select CD4+ HIV‐1 Target Cells in the Genital Tract but Not Systemically: Implications for HIV‐1 Acquisition

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Reproductive Immunology, Volume 93, Issue 5, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Problem Observational data suggest lower HIV susceptibility in women using the injectable contraceptive norethisterone enanthate (NET‐EN) versus intramuscular depo medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA‐IM). Clinical data investigating the effects of injectables on HIV target cells are inconsistent or limited.

Improved Fetal Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using a Flexible Metasurface

open access: yesNMR in Biomedicine, Volume 38, Issue 4, April 2025.
A flexible metasurface pad, positioned between the MRI body coil and the patient, enhances the efficiency and uniformity of the radiofrequency magnetic field. As a result, it reduces fetal and brain dielectric artifacts, which typically appear as signal voids in the images. This innovative approach enables lightweight and compact imaging of fetal brain

Group IB Metal‐Based Nanomaterials for Antibacterial Applications

open access: yesSmall Science, Volume 5, Issue 4, April 2025.
Group IB metal‐based nanomaterials exhibit excellent antibacterial properties, which can kill bacteria through metal ion toxicity, reactive oxygen species, and photothermal effects. The current research on these nanomaterials mainly focuses on two directions: exploring how to achieve stronger and more comprehensive antibacterial performance and ...

Family planning policy and gender in Nigeria: A thematic analysis of the government's health policy perspective

open access: yesSociology of Health &Illness, Volume 47, Issue 2, February 2025.
Abstract Family Planning (FP) lets people control the number and timing of child‐births through using contraceptives and/or restoring fertility. Nigeria has several FP policies for managing its population, yet contraceptives usage remains suboptimal despite high FP awareness, suggesting that several factors might be inhibiting FP uptake. The literature
