Universal Intrinsic Spin Hall Effect [PDF]
We describe a new effect in semiconductor spintronics that leads to dissipationless spin-currents in paramagnetic spin-orbit coupled systems. We argue that in a high mobility two-dimensional electron system with substantial Rashba spin-orbit coupling, a spin-current that flows perpendicular to the charge current is intrinsic.

The structure of communication problems in cellular automata [PDF]
Studying cellular automata with methods from communication complexity appears to be a promising approach. In the past, interesting connections between communication complexity and intrinsic universality in cellular automata were shown.

African recognition of dignity as a basis for universal human rights
I present a typically African account of human dignity, which I derive from Ifeanyi Menkiti’s influential strongly normative view of traditional African practices of recognition respect (2004). I explain how this implies a suitable basis for a common

Transition between chaotic and stochastic universality classes of kinetic roughening
The dynamics of nonequilibrium spatially extended systems are often dominated by fluctuations, e.g., due to deterministic chaos or intrinsic stochasticity.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, higher educational institutions worldwide switched to emergency distance learning in early 2020. The less structured environment of distance learning forced students to regulate their learning and motivation more ...

The Tile Assembly Model is Intrinsically Universal [PDF]
We prove that the abstract Tile Assembly Model (aTAM) of nanoscale self-assembly is intrinsically universal. This means that there is a single tile assembly system U that, with proper initialization, simulates any tile assembly system T. The simulation is "intrinsic" in the sense that the self-assembly process carried out by U is exactly that carried ...

The Humble Reason. On Education in Kant and Fichte
In this paper I will focus on education as the core function of reason in Kant and Fichte. The notion of reason carries an intrinsic tendency to universality, which is difficult to be reconciled with its local (cultural, historical, anthropological ...

Unsupervised Learning Universal Critical Behavior via the Intrinsic Dimension [PDF]
The identification of universal properties from minimally processed data sets is one goal of machine learning techniques applied to statistical physics. Here, we study how the minimum number of variables needed to accurately describe the important features of a data set - the intrinsic dimension ($I_d$) - behaves in the vicinity of phase transitions ...

Geometric Phase in Twisted Topological Complementary Pair
Geometric phase enabled by spin‐orbit coupling has attracted enormous interest in optics over the past few decades. However, it is only applicable to circularly‐polarized light and encounters substantial challenges when applied to wave fields lacking the

The problem of subjectivity of values in the search for a universal environmental ethics
Considering the relationship between the environment and morality, discussion of the matter of values is inevitable. Although there is no consensus on the intrinsic and instrumental characteristics of the value, the condition of talking about ...
