Urban–Wild Interface Diversity: A Comprehensive Checklist of Herpetofauna of Guayaquil, Ecuador

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Amphibians and reptiles in Guayaquil comprise multiple taxonomic orders and occur across conservation areas, forest remnants, and urban parks, including several endemic species and numerous taxa with type localities in the city. Although most species are globally classified as Least Concern, discrepancies between global and national threat assessments ...

Using bi-temporal ALS and NFI-based time-series data to account for large-scale aboveground carbon dynamics: the showcase of mediterranean forests

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Remote Sensing
New remote-sensed biomass change products will transform our capacity to monitor and validate large-scale carbon dynamic in the next decade. In this study, we evaluated the use of multitemporal Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) and the Climate Change ...

The Flooding Gradient Affects Seed Dispersal by Fruit‐Eating Fishes in Amazonian Whitewater Floodplain Forests

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 3, May 2026.
This research approaches the interaction between frugivorous fish and the flooded forests in the central Amazon. We evaluated the fruit consumption by fish and the seed dispersal potential along the flood gradient. We tested the hypothesis that the role of fish as seed dispersers varies between low várzea (LV) and high várzea (HV) forests.

Development of species distribution models helps identify source country anomalies in timber supply chains

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract For many timber species, a lack of consistent, comprehensive global distribution data makes validating supply source (country of harvest) difficult. To supplement these data, we developed species distribution models (SDMs) for the American mahogany species (genus Swietenia) to demonstrate how SDMs can assist in the analysis of supply sources ...

Unravelling the drivers of island species richness in tropical savannas

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 4, April 2026.
Murundu island area explains a substantial proportion of the variation in tree and herb richness, consistent with Island Biogeography Theory. On average, a 10% increase in island size corresponds to increases of seven tree species and 7.8 herb species.

Climatic niche position determines post‐fire resilience in Mediterranean forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 2, February 2026.
Post‐fire forest resilience depends not only on fire severity and fire characteristics but also on the climatic niche position of the forests. As climate warms and the frequency and intensity of fires increase, forest species will be pushed towards the dry edge of their climatic niches, likely increasing their vulnerability. Abstract Fires are a common

Species functional traits affect regional and local dominance across western Amazonian forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 1, January 2026.
Dominant tree species in western Amazonian forests show distinct functional trait combinations linked to habitat type: conservative traits in stressful habitats and greater plant size in less stressful environments. Local dominants are defined by resource conservation strategies and widespread dominants are defined by resource acquisition strategies. A

A Novel Sampling Protocol for Fruit‐Feeding Butterflies in Grasslands and Open Habitats

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 51, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study proposed a novel sampling protocol for fruit‐feeding butterflies in grasslands and open areas in the subtropical region. The new method involves the use of Van Someren‐Rydon bait traps placed on specific supports closer to the ground, aiming to capture the true diversity of butterflies in these habitats.
