Losing Water by Storing It: The Oversighted Side of Intensive Water Regulation and Damming

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 13, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract Reservoirs are crucial for managing water resources but they may also promote enhanced water evaporation inland. Here we analyze the historical trends, causal attribution, and future projections of regional evaporative losses across 362 Spanish reservoirs, representing 94% of the nation's storage capacity, in one of the most heavily dammed ...

Structural and Compositional Disturbance Legacies Mediate the Resistance of European Forests to Repeated Disturbances

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 34, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Climate change is altering forest disturbance regimes across Europe. Structural and species diversity are generally thought to enhance disturbance resistance. However, how disturbances affect stand structure and tree species diversity remains untested across broad spatial gradients and for multiple disturbance agents.

Land Cover Constrains Range Shifts in Northern Iberian Bird Species Under Climate Change Scenarios

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 8, August 2025.
This study examines how land cover changes influence species range shifts under climate change for 32 bird species in the Iberian Peninsula, highlighting the need to consider both factors in conservation planning. ABSTRACT Climate and land cover changes are considered some of the most important drivers of the current biodiversity crisis. The assessment

Combining Observations and Models: A Review of the CARDAMOM Framework for Data‐Constrained Terrestrial Ecosystem Modeling

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 8, August 2025.
The rapid increase in the volume and variety of terrestrial biosphere observations offers a unique opportunity to derive ecological insights, refine process‐based models, and improve forecasting for decision support. Data assimilation frameworks such as the CARbon DAta MOdel fraMework (CARDAMOM) are specifically designed to take advantage of this rapid

Surviving in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation: Richness and Defaunation of Mammals in Priority‐Protected Areas of the Brazilian Midwest

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 50, Issue 7, July 2025.
We found rich and compositionally different assemblages of medium and large‐sized mammals in protected areas on the southern edge of Amazon. However, both have high rates of mammal defaunation. We argue that anthropogenic threats in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation are eroding large ungulate populations, especially peccaries.
