The inverse deformation mapping in the finite element method
This paper aims at the exploitation of material forces to find an optimum mesh in the finite element method (FEM). The classical variational formulation provides the linear momentum equation in a Lagrangian description. A variational setting for the derivation of the canonical momentum equation in the Eulerian description is presented.

A Workflow to Accelerate Microstructure‐Sensitive Fatigue Life Predictions
This study introduces a workflow to accelerate predictions of microstructure‐sensitive fatigue life. Results from frameworks with varying levels of simplification are benchmarked against published reference results. The analysis reveals a trade‐off between accuracy and model complexity, offering researchers a practical guide for selecting the optimal ...

An adaptive finite element method in reconstruction of coefficients in Maxwell's equations from limited observations [PDF]
We propose an adaptive finite element method for the solution of a coefficient inverse problem of simultaneous reconstruction of the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability functions in the Maxwell's system using limited boundary observations ...

Curvature‐tuned auxetic lattices are designed, fabricated, and mechanically characterized to reveal how geometric curvature governs stretchability, stress redistribution, and Poisson's ratio evolution. Photoelastic experiments visualize stress pathways, while hyperelastic simulations quantify deformation mechanics.

Application of dual boundary element method in active sensing [PDF]
In this paper, a boundary element method (BEM) for the dynamic analysis of 3D solid structures with bonded piezoelectric transducers is presented. The host structure is modelled with BEM and the piezoelectric transducers are formulated using a 3D semi ...

We present a class of spline finite element methods for time-domain wave propagation which are particularly amenable to explicit time-stepping. The proposed methods utilize a discontinuous Galerkin discretization to enforce continuity of the solution ...

3D‐Printed Serial Snap‐Through Architectures for Programmable Mechanical Response
A serial snap‐through architecture is realized using compact 3D‐printed von Mises truss units arranged in a staged cascade. Their geometry and boundary conditions program multistage mechanical responses with plateaux and re‐hardening regimes. An inverted‐compliance model predicts these behaviors and enables analytical design of programmable force ...

A boundary element model for structural health monitoring using piezoelectric transducers [PDF]
In this paper, for the first time, the boundary element method (BEM) is used for modelling smart structures instrumented with piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The host structure and its cracks are formulated with the 3D dual boundary element method

Full-waveform inversion via the scaled boundary finite element method
We begin by addressing the time-domain full-waveform inversion using the adjoint method. Next, we derive the scaled boundary semi-weak form of the scalar wave equation in heterogeneous media through the Galerkin method. Unlike conventional formulations, the resulting system incorporates variable density and two additional terms involving its spatial ...
