A two-dimensional four-node quadrilateral inverse element for shape sensing and structural health monitoring [PDF]
The inverse finite element method (iFEM) is a powerful tool for shape sensing and structural health monitoring and has several advantages with respect to some other existing approaches.

The inverse Finite Element Method for shape sensing of aerospace structures
The paper presents recent theoretical developments and numerical results obtained at NASA Langley Research Center, by Dr. Alex Tessler and co-workers, and at Politecnico di Torino, by the AESDO Group, addressing the inverse problem of "shape-sensing", i ...

Inverse finite element modeling of shells using the degenerate solid approach
The Inverse Finite Element Method (IFEM) for degenerate solid shells is introduced. IFEM allows determining the undeformed shape of a body (in this case, a shell-like body) such that it attains a desired shape after large elastic deformations.
