Hierarchical models for semi-competing risks data with application to quality of end-of-life care for pancreatic cancer

open access: yes, 2015
Readmission following discharge from an initial hospitalization is a key marker of quality of health care in the United States. For the most part, readmission has been used to study quality of care for patients with acute health conditions, such as ...

The public agglomeration effect: Urban–rural divisions in government efficiency and political preferences

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Political Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Why and when do cities vote for the left? The emergence of the urban–rural divide in the United States in the 1930s is inconsistent with canonical theories of cleavages. This paper introduces an explanation: agglomeration effects. The provision of government services is more efficient in urban environments because of nonrivalries, economies of

A new trigonometric-inspired probability distribution: A simulation study and applications in reliability and hydrology

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal
The importance of statistical distributions in accurately representing real-world scenarios and aiding in educated decision-making is well recognized. Nonetheless, it is also true that the limitations of these distributions can hinder optimal fitting in ...

Improving fatigue resistance of translucent 4Y‐PSZ zirconia through glass gradation

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Oral Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract To evaluate the effect of graded glass infiltration on the fatigue behavior and mechanical reliability of translucent 4Y‐PSZ zirconia before and after hydrothermal aging, disc‐shaped specimens were fabricated by uniaxial pressing and divided into control and glass‐graded groups (n = 36/group).

Inverse Odd Weibull Generated Family of Distribution

open access: yesPakistan Journal of Statistics and Operation Research, 2020
This work proposes an inverse odd Weibull (IOW) family of distributions for a lifetime distributions. Some mathematical properties of this family of distribution were derived. Survival, hazard, quantiles, reversed hazard, cumulative, odd functions, kurtosis, skewness, order statistics and entropies of this new family of distribution were examined.

Optimal Hedging Strategies in the Low‐Sulphur Bunker Fuel Landscape

open access: yesEuropean Financial Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The IMO2020 regulation for the green transition in shipping turned the industry into using two compliant bunker fuels: very low‐sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) and low‐sulphur marine gas oil (LSMGO). VLSFO futures contracts introduced in late 2019 and other energy‐related futures contracts indicate that the VLSFO contracts trading on the Singapore ...

On the implications of a new statistical model and machine learning algorithms in music engineering

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal
The significance of probability distributions in representing practical occurrences cannot be overstated. In particular, the two-parameter Weibull distribution and the inverse Weibull (I-Weibull) distribution have proven to be highly effective in various

Some Extended Classes of Distributions: Characterizations and Properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Based on a simple relationship between two truncated moments and certain functions of the th order statistic, we characterize some extended classes of distributions recently proposed in the statistical literature, videlicet Beta-G, Gamma-G, Kumaraswamy-G

Does Pay Transparency for Employees Affect Product Recalls?

open access: yesJournal of Business Finance &Accounting, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pay transparency can affect workers’ behavior and, consequently, firm outcomes. This study exploits the state‐level, staggered enactment of pay transparency laws to examine how pay transparency affects firms’ product recalls. We find that firms headquartered in pay‐transparency‐law states see an increase in product recalls.
