Ion-ion collisions belong to the fundamental processes in all types of plasmas in astrophysical objects (e.g. the earth’s ionoshpere or the solar corona) as well as in laboratory discharges (for example in thermonuclear fusion). The knowledge of cross sections for ion-ion collision processes is therefore essential for the modeling of these plasmas.

Positive Ion Transmission Mode Ion/Ion Reactions in a Hybrid Linear Ion Trap
Analytical Chemistry, 2004A triple quadrupole mass spectrometer capable of ion trapping experiments has been adapted for ion/ion reaction studies. The instrument is based on a commercially available linear ion trap (LIT) tandem mass spectrometer (i.e., an MDS SCIEX 2000 Q TRAP) that has been modified by mounting an atmospheric sampling glow discharge ionization (ASGDI) source ...

Let us start by asking three questions. What types of ion-ion reaction have been studied? Why are these studies worthwhile? Where can more detailed information be found?

Cross section of ion excitation in ion-ion collision
Physics Letters A, 1979Abstract The “effective Feynman diagram” technique introduced in a previous paper is used to express the cross section of ion excitation in ion-ion collisions (A + B → A ∗ + B) in terms of the corresponding photon resonance absorption (hv + A → A ∗ ) and Thomson-scattering ( hv + B → hv + B ) cross sections.

Electron-Ion and Ion Ion Recombination Processes
1994Publisher Summary This chapter discusses electron–ion and ion–ion recombination processes. Recombination processes have historically been distinguished by the mechanism responsible for disposal of the excess energy of recombination via radiative decay, dissociation or collision with third bodies. When intermediate resonant states become involved, the

Electron-Ion and Ion-Ion Collisions in Astrophysics
1986There has long been a close association between astrophysical studies and the development of atomic collision theory. This interaction took a major step forward when, some forty years ago, the real nature of the solar corona was first understood as a very hot tenuous plasma.
