Modulational instability of ionization waves

Journal of Applied Physics, 1985
The modulation instability evolving from a continuously amplitude-modulated perturbation is observed in the ionization waves excited in the He positive column of a glow discharge. The degree of modulation increases with wave propagation, and an isolated pulse-like wave evolves.

Ionization instability in dusty plasmas

Physics of Plasmas, 1997
The ionization instability in a dusty plasma in which the neutral gas is ionized by a constant flux of energetic electrons with energy slightly above the ionization energy is examined by using fluid equations for the three charged components, namely positive ions, electrons, and negatively charged dust grains.

Ionization instability by energized electrons in weakly ionized unmagnetized plasmas

Physics of Plasmas, 2004
A fluid model for an ionization instability in weakly ionized and non magnetized plasmas is presented. The equilibrium state is assumed to exist in a plasma where additional ionizations are produced by an energized electron group Jeb, considered as monoenergetic, with energy exceeding the ionization threshold of the neutral gas.

Stabilization of liquid instabilities with ionized gas jets

Nature, 2021
Impinging gas jets can induce depressions in liquid surfaces, a phenomenon familiar to anyone who has observed the cavity produced by blowing air through a straw directly above a cup of juice. A dimple-like stable cavity on a liquid surface forms owing to the balance of forces among the gas jet impingement, gravity and surface tension1,2.

Genomic Instability Induced by Ionizing Radiation

Radiation Research, 1996
Genomic instability is characterized by the increased rate of acquisition of alterations in the mammalian genome. These changes encompass a diverse set of biological end points including karyotypic abnormalities, gene mutation and amplification, cellular transformation, clonal heterogeneity and delayed reproductive cell death.
