Ionizational instability in an ionized inert gas flowing in a magnetic field

Physical Review E, 2001
We discuss the evolution of ionization instability, which gives rise to the formation of regular structures in plasma. The experiment was conducted in a disk magnetohydrodynamic channel in Xe. The evolution of luminous inhomogeneities, and changes in the luminosities of individual inhomogeneities, are traced. Electron concentrations and temperatures in

Ionization instability in a stratified plasma

Plasma Physics, 1971
Ionization instability in a stratified non-equilibrium plasma subjected to crossed E and B fields is investigated by means of a simple model without diffusion processes and boundary effects. An inhomogeneous infinite plasma, consisting of alternate one-dimensional layers of high and low electron temperature (T02>T01) lying in the plane perpendicular to

Ionization-induced instability in an electron-collecting sheath

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 1985
Abstract : A numerical investigation of the electron collecting sheath about a positively biased probe in the ionosphere has been conducted to determine the effect of ionization within the sheath. This report is directed at the space charge limited regime appropriate to objects with characteristic size much larger than the ambient Debye length, and ...

Induction of genetic instability by ionizing radiation

Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences - Series III - Sciences de la Vie, 1999
Evidence is presented to support the hypothesis that radiation may induce a heritable, genome-wide process of instability that leads to an enhanced frequency of genetic changes occurring among the progeny of the original irradiated cell. This instability is transmissible over many generations of cell replication.

Low frequency bursts and ionization instabilities in weakly ionized plasmas

Contributions to Plasma Physics, 2003
AbstractIn this paper we report time dependent ion density bursts observed during the electron collection process from an unmagnetized plasma by a positively polarized electrode. For bias voltages over a threshold a double layer develops and the electron drained current exceeds the thermal levels. The energized electrons by the plasma potential voltage

Instability of ionization equilibrium of a weakly ionized three-component plasma

Physical Review A, 1979
The general stability conditions of a three-component plasma lead, in addition to the usual critical phenomena, to the appearance of a chemical instability, connected with the multiple solution of the law of mass action. As a result of a first-order transition the system will separate into two phases with different degrees of ionization.

Shadowing instabilities of ionization fronts

Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1999
ABSTRA C T Weak upstream overdensities or underdensities lead to the corrugation of R-type ionization fronts. The propagation velocity of the R-type front varies as a result of the different line-ofsight emission measures, and is also decreased because of the obliqueness of the front.

Ionization instability and dusty plasma structurization

Plasma Physics Reports, 2000
In the presence of ionization processes, a homogeneous equilibrium dust distribution often appears as a balance between plasma generation by ionization and plasma absorption by dust particles. It is shown that such equilibrium, often present in laboratory plasmas, is generally unstable against the formation of dust clumps separated by dust-free regions

Thermosolutal instability of a partially-ionized plasma

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1988
The thermosolutal instability of a partially-ionized plasma in the presence of a horizontal magnetic field is considered to include the frictional effect of collisions of ionized with neutrals. The sufficient conditions for non-existence of overstability are derived.

Ionization instabilities and resonant acoustic modes

Physics of Plasmas, 2001
A linear stability analysis of ion-acoustic and dust-acoustic waves is carried out using a multifluid model in the presence of ionization, ion drag, and collisions of ions and dust with the background neutral gas. It is found that an unstable dust-acoustic mode of nonzero real frequency can be generated via a resonance phenomenon.
