Ionization-recombination instability in a photo-ionized nebula

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2010
In this work, we consider the thermal (radiation) instability in a weakly ionized plasma with continuous ionization and recombination. The situation can be visualized in the case of envelopes of planetary nebulae, which are envelopes of ionized plasmas surrounding a red giant stars.

Instabilities in the ionization zones around the first stars [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy Reports, 2012
We consider the evolution of the ionization zone around Population III stars with $M_*\sim 25-200 M_\odot$ in protogalaxies with $M\sim 10^7 M_\odot$ at redshifts $z = 12$, assuming that the dark matter profile is a modified isothermal sphere. We study the conditions for the growth of instabilities in the ionization zones.

Hybrid Simulation of Proton Cyclotron Waves Upstream of Mars Generated by Pickup Ion Beam Distribution

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
Linear instability analysis as well as a corresponding two‐dimensional hybrid simulation are performed to examine the excitation of the proton cyclotron waves observed upstream of Mars.

Ionization, Magneto-rotational, and Gravitational Instabilities in Thin Accretion Disks Around Supermassive Black Holes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We consider the combined role of the thermal ionization, magneto-rotational and gravitational instabilities in thin accretion disks around supermassive black holes.

Kelvin–Helmholtz instability in a weakly ionized layer [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysics and Space Science, 2007
We study the linear theory of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a layer of ions and neutrals with finite thickness. In the short wavelength limit the thickness of the layer has a negligible effect on the growing modes. However, perturbations with wavelength comparable to layer's thickness are significantly affected by the thickness of the layer.

An accretion model for the growth of the central black hole associated with ionization instability in quasars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
A possible accretion model associated with the ionization instability of quasar disks is proposed to address the growth of the central black hole harbored in the host galaxy. The mass ratio between black hole and its host galactic bulge is a nature ...

Rayleigh-Taylor Instability at Ionization Fronts: Perturbation Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The linear growth rate of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) at ionization fronts is investigated via perturbation analysis in the limit of incompressible fluids.

Evolution of the rippled inner-interface-initiated ablative Rayleigh–Taylor instability in laser-ablating high-Z doped targets [PDF]

open access: yesMatter and Radiation at Extremes
In the direct drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) scheme, a rippled interface between the ablator and the deuterium–tritium ice fuel can feed out and form perturbation seeds for the ablative Rayleigh–Taylor instability, with undesirable effects ...

Formation of Fluctuations in the Molecular Slab via Isobaric Thermal Instability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The frictional heating by ion-neutral drift is calculated and its effect on isobaric thermal instability is carried out. Ambipolar drift heating of one-dimensional self-gravitating magnetized molecular slab is used under the assumptions of quasi ...

Artificial E-region field-aligned plasma irregularities generated at pump frequencies near the second electron gyroharmonic [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2009
E region ionospheric modification experiments have been performed at HAARP using pump frequencies about 50 kHz above and below the second electron gyroharmonic frequency.
