InSAR-Based Assessment of Land Subsidence Induced by Coal Mining in Karaganda, Kazakhstan

open access: yesGeomatics
The objective of this study is to quantify and characterize ground deformations induced by underground coal mining in the Karaganda coal basin, Kazakhstan, in order to improve the understanding of subsidence processes and their long-term evolution.

On the Energy Source of Green Emissions in Ghost

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 2, 28 January 2026.
Abstract The understanding on the formation mechanism of ghosts as a new category of transient luminous events and favorable conditions for their occurrence is limited. In this work, we examined six ground‐based observations of ghost events captured by digital SLR cameras.

Ionospheric Response to the Extreme Geomagnetic Storm of 10–11 May 2024 Based on Total Electron Content Observations in the Central Asian and East Asian Regions

open access: yesAtmosphere
The ionospheric response to the major geomagnetic storm (SYM-H = −518 nT) of 10–11 May 2024 was investigated using total electron content (TEC) observations from the Central Asian (CAR) and East Asian (EAR) regions.

Supershear Transitions and Bilateral Asymmetric Rupture of the 2025 Sagaing (Myanmar) Earthquake Revealed by Geodetic and Seismic Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 2, 28 January 2026.
Abstract The Sagaing Fault (SF) accommodates major plate motion in Myanmar, yet large earthquakes along it have rarely been captured by modern geodetic and seismic observations. The 2025 Sagaing earthquake generated an exceptionally long rupture (∼535 km), offering a rare opportunity to investigate rupture dynamics along continental transform fault. We

Coupling Between Dispersive Alfvén Wave and Modified Electron Acoustic Wave in Downward Current Region: Parallel Potential Drop and Upgoing Ionospheric Electrons

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 2, 28 January 2026.
Abstract Results from a 1D kinetic simulation, for the first time, unveil the generation and time evolution of the downward parallel electric fields stemming from the coupling between modified electron acoustic waves (MEAWs) and dispersive Alfvén waves (DAWs).

Origin of Intense Plasma Depletions After Midnight Over the Korean Peninsula During the Geomagnetic Storm on 11 May 2024

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 2, 28 January 2026.
Abstract A band of total electron content (TEC) depletions of about 5–15 TEC unit passed over the Korean Peninsula after midnight during the geomagnetic storm on 11 May 2024. This magnitude of TEC depletions has not been previously reported in the region.

Seismogenic Effects in Variation of the ULF/VLF Emission in a Complex Study of the Lithosphere–Ionosphere Coupling Before an M6.1 Earthquake in the Region of Northern Tien Shan

open access: yesGeosciences
A complex study was performed of the disturbances in geophysics parameters that were observed during a short-term period of earthquake preparation. On 4 March 2024, an M6.1 earthquake (N 42.93, E 76.966) occurred with the epicenter 12.2 km apart from the

On the Seeding of Equatorial Plasma Bubbles by Longitudinal Variations in the Meridional Wind

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 2, 28 January 2026.
Abstract We report results from SAMI3/WACCM‐X simulations that small‐scale (∼ ${\sim} $few 100 km) longitudinal variations in the meridional wind provide seeds to initiate equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs). The meridional wind variations generate variations in the ion density along the magnetic field via ion‐neutral collisions.
