Ion specific effects: decoupling ion–ion and ion–water interactions [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2015
Ion-specific effects in aqueous solution, known as the Hofmeister effect, are prevalent in diverse systems. The objective of this paper is to explicitly demonstrate how complex ion–ion and ion–water interactions manifest themselves in the Hofmeister effect based on a series of recent experimental observations.

Ion/ion chemistry of high-mass multiply charged ions [PDF]

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, 1998
Electrospray ionization has enabled the establishment of a new area of ion chemistry research based on the study of the reactions of high-mass multiply charged ions with ions of opposite polarity. The multiple-charging phenomenon associated with electrospray makes possible the generation of multiply charged reactant ions that yield charged products as ...

Ions Salting Out Ions at the Water-Air Interface

open access: yes, 2022
In common aqueous systems, including naturally occurring sweet and salt water, as well as tap water, multiple ion species are co-solvated. At the water-air interface, these ions are known to affect chemical reactivity, aerosol formation, climate, and ...

Dimeric Transmembrane Orientations of APP/C99 Regulate γ-Secretase Processing Line Impacting Signaling and Oligomerization

open access: yesiScience, 2020
Summary: Amyloid precursor protein (APP) cleavage by the β-secretase produces the C99 transmembrane (TM) protein, which contains three dimerization-inducing Gly-x-x-x-Gly motifs.

Distonoid ions [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, 2006
By Yates, Bouma, and Radom's definition, distonic radical ions are those formally arising by ionization of diradicals or zwitterionic molecules (including ylides). These ions differ, therefore, from conventional radical ions by displaying the charge site and unpaired electron site (spin) localized mandatorily on separate atoms or group of atoms; that ...

Bactericidal action of positive and negative ions in air [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
YesIn recent years there has been renewed interest in the use of air ionisers to control of the spread of airborne infection. One characteristic of air ions which has been widely reported is their apparent biocidal action.

An ion trap-ion mobility-time of flight mass spectrometer with three ion sources for ion/ion reactions [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, 2009
This instrument combines the capabilities of ion/ion reactions with ion mobility (IM) and time-of-flight (TOF) measurements for conformation studies and top-down analysis of large biomolecules. Ubiquitin ions from either of two electrospray ionization (ESI) sources are stored in a three dimensional (3D) ion trap (IT) and reacted with negative ions from

Hydrated Ions: From Individual Ions to Ion Pairs to Ion Clusters

open access: yesThe Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2015
The structure of hydrated ions plays a central role in chemical and biological sciences. In the present paper, five ions, namely, Na(+), K(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+) and Cl(-), are examined using molecular dynamics simulations. In addition to hydrated individual ions and ion pairs identified previously, hydrated ion clusters containing 3, 4, 5, or more ions ...

Redox Potentials of Uranyl Ions in Macrocyclic Complexes: Quantifying the Role of Counter-Ions

open access: yes, 2023
Several uranyl ions strapped with Schiff-base ligands in the presence of redox-innocent metal ions are synthesized, and their reduction potentials are recently estimated.
