Biomimetic Iridescent Skin: Robust Prototissues Spontaneously Assembled from Photonic Protocells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 26, 30 March 2026.
Uniform nanoparticles are induced to form arrays (photonic crystals) in the cores of biopolymer capsules, endowing these ‘protocells’ with structural color. These protocells are then assembled into large self‐standing objects, i.e., prototissues, with robust mechanical properties as well as iridescent optical properties.

Developmental and comparative transcriptomic identification of iridophore contribution to white barring in clownfish [PDF]

open access: yesPigment Cell & Melanoma Research, 2019
AbstractActinopterygian fishes harbor at least eight distinct pigment cell types, leading to a fascinating diversity of colors. Among this diversity, the cellular origin of the white color appears to be linked to several pigment cell types such as iridophores or leucophores.

The Genetic Basis of Color Polymorphism in the Orb‐Web Spider Gasteracantha cancriformis

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
This study investigates the genetic basis of coloration in the polymorphic spider Gasteracantha cancriformis using RNA‐seq data from different female color morphs. We assembled a reference transcriptome and identified differentially expressed genes associated with known pigmentation pathways, including carotenoids, melanin, ommochromes, and pteridines.

Pigments, Chromatophore Structure, and Gene Expression Underlying Colour Polytypy of a Panamanian Poison Frog

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Colour polytypism represents an example of phenotypic diversification shaped by genetic divergence and ecological pressures. Poison frogs of the genus Oophaga (Dendrobatidae) are highly polytypic in coloration, making them an ideal system for investigating the genetic and physiological basis of colour variation.

Identification of kit-ligand a as the Gene Responsible for the Medaka Pigment Cell Mutant few melanophore

open access: yesG3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics, 2020
The body coloration of animals is due to pigment cells derived from neural crest cells, which are multipotent and differentiate into diverse cell types.

A Predictive Design Framework for Tunable Structural Colour Inspired by Morpho Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Structural colour arises from light interacting with nanoscale architectures, yet generalizable design rules for engineering such effects remain limited. Here, we introduce a predictive design framework for tunable structural colour based on simplified Morpho‐inspired photonic nanostructures.

Phosphoproteomic analysis reveals the diversity of signaling behind ErbB‐inhibitor‐induced phenotypes

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 292, Issue 24, Page 6557-6575, December 2025.
Whole‐organism phosphoproteomics after ErbB inhibitor treatment was assessed in zebrafish embryos. Differential signaling was uncovered after treatments with more selective ErbB inhibitors and pan‐ErbB inhibitors, despite similar neurological and myocardial phenotypes.

Regulation of zebrafish melanocyte development by ligand-dependent BMP signaling

open access: yeseLife, 2019
Preventing terminal differentiation is important in the development and progression of many cancers including melanoma. Recent identification of the BMP ligand GDF6 as a novel melanoma oncogene showed GDF6-activated BMP signaling suppresses ...

The Effect of The Divalent Cation Ionophore A23187 on Amphibian Melanophores and Iridophores

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Dermatology, 1977
Calcium ions are required in the medium for the full darkening action of melanocyte-stimulating hormone, but not for its second messenger, cyclic adenosine monophosphate, on isolated frog skin. Thus, the possible effect of the divalent cation ionophore A23187 was studied, using the skin of Rana pipiens.

Modulation of light localization in the iridophores of the deep-sea highlight hatchetfish Sternoptyx pseudobscura under magnetic field

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2017
Efficient light control by certain tissue in bioluminescent fish offers potential for new optical devices. In the world’s deep-seas, there are numerous fish species with such bioluminescence yet to be discovered.
