Information theory and the iriscode [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Iris recognition has legendary resistance to False Matches, and the tools of information theory can help to explain why. The concept of entropy is fundamental to understanding biometric collision avoidance.

Selective Targeting of Immune Checkpoints HLA‐G and CD47 Using Novel Dual Signaling Protein DSP216 Promotes Innate Anticancer Immunity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The inhibitory immune checkpoints HLA‐G and CD47 are expressed on certain tumor types and inhibit immune cells in the tumor microenvironment. DSP216 binds specifically to cancer cells expressing both HLA‐G and CD47, and blocks their inhibitory signaling.

Radiographic Detection of Post-Traumatic Bone Fractures: Contribution of Artificial Intelligence Software to the Analysis of Senior and Junior Radiologists

open access: yesJournal of the Belgian Society of Radiology
Objectives: The aims of this study were: (a) to evaluate the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) software package (Boneview Trauma, Gleamer) for the detection of post-traumatic bone fractures in radiography as a standalone; (b) used by two ...

Non‐Destructive Hydrophobic Engineering of Inverse Catalysts for Methanol Synthesis from CO2

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this study, we report a non‐destructive hydrophobic modification strategy for ZrO2/Cu catalyst through physical mixing with PDVB. The optimized ZrO2/Cu‐PDVB catalyst achieves a methanol space‐time yield of 920.10 mgCH3OH gcat−1 h−1 under mild conditions, outperforming the unmodified catalyst by 30 %.

Spinning bodies in general relativity from bosonic worldline oscillators

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics
Worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) has proven itself a powerful tool for classical two-body scattering calculations in general relativity. In this paper we develop a new worldline action involving bosonic oscillators, which enables the use of the WQFT

A 24‐week double‐blind placebo‐controlled study of the efficacy and safety of the AMPA modulator S47445 in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease and depressive symptoms

open access: yesAlzheimer’s & Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions, 2019
Introduction S47445 is a novel positive allosteric modulator of alpha‐amino‐3‐hydroxy‐5‐methyl‐4‐isoxazole‐propionic acid receptors that may emerge as a favorable candidate for the symptomatic treatment of cognitive and depressive disorders in patients ...

The pupil reflects motor preparation for saccades - even before the eye starts to move

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2011
The eye produces saccadic eye movements which show the shortest reaction times in humans. Saccade latencies reflect ongoing cortical processing and, generally, shorter latencies are supposed to reflect advanced motor preparation.

Deep Volumetric Super‐Resolution Imaging in Thick Biological Specimens With Sparse Scanning SIM

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sparse scanning structured illumination microscopy (SS‐SIM) extends the axial depth in super‐resolution fluorescence imaging by combining rapid laser scanning, pixel‐addressed intensity modulation, and sCMOS camera detection. SS‐SIM yields 1.6× lateral and 1.7× axial resolution gains over wide‐field microscopy and enables imaging through 300–600 µm ...
