The Resistance of the Tissue of the Iris and the Form of the Iris
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1957The resistance of an elastic membrane to a pressure acting on its surfaces depends on the primary resistance of the membrane and on its stretching. By stretching the resistance increases and the bulging produced by a pressure is reduced; by relaxation the resistance decreases and the bulging produced by a pressure is increased.

The clinical and anatomopathological features of angioma of the iris are described and the relevant literature is briefly reviewed. A personal case in a 47-year-old woman is presented. Reference is made to the fact that, unlike many of the cases in the literature, histological confirmation of the diagnosis was obtained.

Most iris tumors behave benignly, reflecting their small size and the high proportion of nevi and spindle A melanomas. Of 1,043 reported iris melanomas, 31 metastasized (3%). Metastasis from a spindle A melanoma is not known to occur despite documented growth and local recurrence after excision.
