Iron is a highly reactive metal which will bind to a wide variety of biological substances including sugars, amino acids, nucleotides, peptides and proteins. To discuss iron binding proteins is to discuss almost all human proteins. In this paper I intend to discuss the role of the specific iron binding proteins, transferrin and ferritin, in relation to

Antimicrobial Properties of Iron-Binding Proteins
1981The transferrins are iron-binding proteins with molecular weights of around 80,000, which interact with a maximum of two ferric atoms per each protein molecule. The best known transferrins are the serotransferrins from animal sera, lactoferrins from milk, and conalbumin from egg-white.

Iron-Binding Proteins and 67Ga Accumulation by Tumor Cells
Nuklearmedizin, 1989Tumor cells incubated with 67Ga-citrate plus lactoferrin showed a lactoferrin concentration-dependent increase of 67Ga uptake while for transferrin the effect was an inhibition. A correlation was observed between the binding of 131l-labelled lactoferrin or 131l-labelled transferrin and the uptake of 67Ga by the cells.

Insect iron binding proteins: Insights from the genomes
Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2006Sequencing of the genomes of Drosophila melanogaster, Anopheles gambiae, Apis mellifera, and Bombyx mori provided an opportunity to examine the diversity and organization of genes encoding insect transferrins (Tsf) and ferritins. Information obtained from the genomes significantly advances our knowledge of these major players in insect iron metabolism ...

Studies by Quantitative Immunoelectrophoresis on Iron Binding Proteins in Haemochromatosis
Clinical Science, 19701. The concentrations of a number of plasma proteins in patients with haemochromatosis were determined by quantitative immunoelectrophoresis, particular attention being paid to the three iron transporting proteins. 2. Transferrin and haptoglobin were within normal limits; haemopexin was significantly greater than normal (P < 0·001)

Urinary Excretion of Iron-Binding Protein in the Nephrotic Syndrome
New England Journal of Medicine, 1961ALTHOUGH siderophilin (transferrin) is present in the urine of nephrotic patients1 and is often in low concentration in the serum of these patients,1 , 2 the quantitative aspects of siderophilinuria in renal disease have not been extensively investigated.

[Iron and iron-binding proteins in inflammation and tumors].
Wiener medizinische Wochenschrift. Supplement, 1984Iron and iron binding proteins are involved in various regulatory mechanisms in infections and tumors. Chronic infections and tumors are the most common reasons of anemias in hospitalized patients in industrial countries. Although a lot of investigative work has been done to identify the underlying mechanisms many details are still poorly understood ...
