Annals of Agricultural and Environmental Medicine, 2023 Iron is an essential trace element for various cellular proteins and for biological processes in all cells. Severe iron deficiency (ID) impairs haem synthesis, reduces erythropoiesis and causes iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). Iron restriction in anaemia of inflammation is mainly due to retention of iron in macrophages.
