Annals of Neurology, 1984AbstractAlthough iron accumulates in the brain in a number of pathological conditions, including Hallervorden‐Spatz syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and neurosyphilis, studies of brain iron metabolism have been performed only rarely. Neuronal‐enriched cultures were prepared from fetal mouse brain. After 18 days the cells were exposed to radiolabeled iron.

Hepatology, 1990The effect of hepatic iron on the uptake of ferritin was studied by perfusing livers from normal, iron deficient and iron–loaded rats with 125I–labeled ferritin. Unlabeled ferritin with tracer doses of labeled ferritin in concentrations of 0.02 to 2,700 nmol/L were studied.

Iron uptake in Salmonella typhimurium
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1971The iron-uptake system of S. typhimurium is energy-dependent, repressed by growth in the presence of iron, and apparently specific for iron. Iron uptake is stimulated by a sideramine and by phenolic acids. In mutants unable to synthesize enterobactin, the uptake system remains functional. Iron inside the cell is not available to external chelators.

The iron is not incorporated into haemoglobin, but is probably attached to stromal iron acceptors. Red cells from blood with saturated transferrin have more iron‐acceptor sites occupied than have red cells from blood with unsaturated transferrin.
