Abnormal iron uptake and liver cancer [PDF]

open access: yesCancer Biology & Therapy, 2009
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Iron overload represents a significant risk factor in the development of HCC. Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic iron overload disease characterized by hepatic iron accumulation.

Tumour cell labelling by magnetic nanoparticles with determination of intracellular iron content and spatial distribution of the intracellular iron [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
: Magnetically labelled cells are used for in vivo cell tracking by MRI, used for the clinical translation of cell-base therapies. Studies involving magnetic labelled cells may include separation of labelled cells, targeted delivery and controlled ...

Anaerobic iron uptake by Escherichia coli [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1984
Assimilation and uptake of iron in anaerobic cultures of Escherichia coli were supported by iron supplied as ferrienterobactin, ferrichrome, and ferrous ascorbate; however, as in the aerobic cultures, ferrichrome A was a poor iron source. Albomycin inhibited both aerobically and anaerobically grown cells.

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Uptake of iron from ferrous fumarate can be mediated by clathrin-dependent endocytosis in Hutu-80 cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences
Iron uptake in the intestinal epithelium is associated with transport of ferrous iron via the DMT1 transporter (SLC11a2; NRAMP2). In later years, uptake of iron from complex sources, such as nanoparticles, has been found to be mediated through ...

Possible role of membrane gamma-glutamyltransferase activity in the facilitation of transferrin-dependent and -independent iron uptake by cancer cells.

open access: yesCancer Cell International, 2003
Background The molecular mechanisms by which iron is physiologically transported trough the cellular membranes are still only partially understood. Several studies indicate that a reduction step of ferric iron to ferrous is necessary, both in the case of

Influence of different iron availability on phosphoenolpiruvate carboxilase and malate dehydrogenase in roots of maize (Zea Mays L.) plants grown under iron deficiency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The effect of the different nitrate availability on some enzymatic activities has been evaluated in iron deficient and iron sufficient maize plants (Zea mays L.).

Real‐time assay of ribonucleotide reductase activity with a fluorescent RNA aptamer

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ribonucleotide reductases (RNR) synthesize DNA building blocks de novo, making them crucial in DNA replication and drug targeting. FLARE introduces the first single‐tube real‐time coupled RNR assay, which enables isothermal tracking of RNR activity at nanomolar enzyme levels and allows the reconstruction of allosteric regulatory patterns and rapid ...

Phenotypic Adaptation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the Presence of Siderophore-Antibiotic Conjugates during Epithelial Cell Infection

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
Iron acquisition pathways have often been considered to be gateways for the uptake of antibiotics into bacteria. Bacteria excrete chelators, called siderophores, to access iron.

Short-term acidification promotes diverse iron acquisition and conservation mechanisms in upwelling-associated phytoplankton

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Coastal upwelling regions are among the most productive marine ecosystems but may be threatened by amplified ocean acidification. Increased acidification is hypothesized to reduce iron bioavailability for phytoplankton thereby expanding iron limitation ...
