Oxygen Supply of Islets of Langerhans by Photosynthetically Active Microalgae in Bioprinted Co‐Cultures Maintains Their Function in a Hypoxic Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.

Reproduction of the Lyman α irradiance variability from analysis of full-disk images in the CaII K-line [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
We have compared three years of daily CaII K-line images from the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) with HI Lymanα irradiance data from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS).

Solar Irradiance Variability is Caused by the Magnetic Activity on the Solar Surface

open access: yes, 2017
The variation in the radiative output of the Sun, described in terms of solar irradiance, is important to climatology. A common assumption is that solar irradiance variability is driven by its surface magnetism.

Solar Irradiance Variability and Climate

open access: yes, 2013
The brightness of the Sun varies on all time scales on which it has been observed, and there is increasing evidence that it has an influence on climate. The amplitudes of such variations depend on the wavelength and possibly on the time scale.

Bioorthogonal Photoactivation of 2‐Nitrobenzyl Caged Doxorubicin Anticancer Prodrugs on Gold Nanostars

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Bioorthogonal chemistry was applied to intracellularly photoactivate Doxorubicin (Dox) using gold nanostars (AuNSt) and near‐infrared (NIR) light. Two prodrugs were used: one photoactivatable, masked with 2‐nitrobenzyl carbamate (proDox1) and another photolabile, masked with 2‐nitrobenzyl diol (proDox2), which was attached to the AuNSt surface.

Hydrogel Thermostat Inspired by Photoprotective Foliage Using Latent and Radiative Heat Control

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Guided by Populus alba foliage, this hydrogel latent‐radiative thermostat (LRT) actively balances latent and radiative heat fluxes. An LRT switches solar reflectance, maintains high mid‐IR emissivity, and reversibly evaporates/regenerates water, while titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles toughen the film.

Scalable Solar Evaporator Based on Bandgap Engineered CuMnCrO4 Spinel Oxide with Salt‐Resistant Property for Contaminated Seawater

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Incorporating multiple cations (Cu2⁺ and Cr3⁺) into the Mn3O4 spinel lattice strategically tunes the electronic structure, narrowing the bandgap from 2.3 to 1.49 eV. This enhances visible–NIR light absorption and photothermal conversion, enabling a high water evaporation rate of 4.1 kg m−2 h−1 under 1 sun.

UV solar irradiance in observations and the NRLSSI and SATIRE-S models

open access: yes, 2015
Total solar irradiance and UV spectral solar irradiance have been monitored since 1978 through a succession of space missions. This is accompanied by the development of models aimed at replicating solar irradiance by relating the variability to solar ...
