Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.

Electrical Conductivities of Conductors, Semiconductors, and Their Mixtures at Elevated Temperatures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a comprehensive review of temperature‐dependent electrical conductivity data for multiple material classes at elevated temperatures, highlighting a persistent conductivity gap between metals and semiconductors in the range of 102$\left(10\right)^{2}$– 107$\left(10\right)^{7}$ S/m. Metal–ceramic irregular metamaterials are proposed

Application of the MEGNO technique to the dynamics of Jovian irregular satellites

open access: yes, 2009
We apply the MEGNO (Mean Exponential Growth of Nearby Orbits) technique to the dynamics of Jovian irregular satellites. We demonstrate the efficiency of applying the MEGNO indicator to generate a mapping of relevant phase-space regions occupied by ...

Clues to the Origin of Jovian Outer Irregular Satellites from Reflectance Spectra

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal
Visible/near-infrared narrowband spectroscopy (dispersion per element ∼ 6 Å) was obtained of the Jovian irregular satellites JVI Himalia, JVII Elara, JVIII Pasiphae, JIX Sinope, JX Lysithea, JXI Carme, JXII Ananke, and JXVII Callirrhoe in 2006, 2009, and

Collisional Evolution of Irregular Satellite Swarms: Detectable Dust around Solar System and Extrasolar Planets

open access: yes, 2010
Since the 1980's it has been becoming increasingly clear that the Solar System's irregular satellites are collisionally evolved. We derive a general model for the collisional evolution of an irregular satellite swarm and apply it to the Solar System and ...

On‐Demand Activation of Thin Alginate Shell Encapsulated Volatile Liquid for Untethered Pneumatic Soft Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐changing liquids enable untethered pneumatic actuation in soft robotics but suffer from volatility and storage challenges. This work reports a simple method to encapsulate Novec 7000 within micron‐thin alginate shells via in situ injection and ionic crosslinking.

Saturnian Irregular Satellites as a Probe of Kuiper Belt Surface Evolution

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal
We present the JWST NIRSpec PRISM 0.7–5.3 μ m spectra of Albiorix and Siarnaq and the NIRSpec G235H/G395M 1.7–5.3 μ m spectra of Phoebe, the three largest Saturnian irregular satellites.

Effect of powder recycling on inclusion content and distribution in AISI 316L produced by L-PBF technique

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2023
AISI 316 L stainless steel is widely used as material to produce components by means of additive manufacturing. To increase the circular economy, the powders are collected and re-used after the printing process, thus the effect of powder recycling on ...

On collisional capture rates of irregular satellites around the gas-giant planets and the minimum mass of the solar nebula

open access: yes, 2011
We investigated the probability that an inelastic collision of planetesimals within the Hill sphere of the Jovian planets could explain the presence and orbits of observed irregular satellites. Capture of satellites via this mechanism is highly dependent

Deciphering the Origin of the Regular Satellites of Gaseous Giants - Iapetus: the Rosetta Ice-Moon [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Here we show that Iapetus can serve to discriminate between satellite formation models. Its accretion history can be understood in terms of a two-component gaseous subnebula, with a relatively dense inner region, and an extended tail out to the location ...
