Gaussian optical Ising machines [PDF]
It has recently been shown that optical parametric oscillator (OPO) Ising machines, consisting of coupled optical pulses circulating in a cavity with parametric gain, can be used to probabilistically find low-energy states of Ising spin systems. In this work, we study optical Ising machines that operate under simplified Gaussian dynamics.

Distance-based clustering using QUBO formulations
In computer science, clustering is a technique for grouping data. Ising machines can solve distance-based clustering problems described by quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) formulations.

Who is afraid of machines? [PDF]
SUMMARY We study how various types of machines, namely, information and communication technologies, software and especially industrial robots, affect the demand for workers of different education, age and gender. We do so by exploiting differences in the composition of workers across countries, industries and time. Our data set comprises

What is the machine learning? [PDF]
Applications of machine learning tools to problems of physical interest are often criticized for producing sensitivity at the expense of transparency. To address this concern, we explore a data planing procedure for identifying combinations of variables -- aided by physical intuition -- that can discriminate signal from background.

Guiding Principle for Minor-Embedding in Simulated-Annealing-Based Ising Machines
We propose a novel type of minor-embedding (ME) in simulated-annealing-based Ising machines. The Ising machines can solve combinatorial optimization problems. Many combinatorial optimization problems are mapped to find the ground (lowest-energy) state of

Observation of distinct phase transitions in a nonlinear optical Ising machine
Optical Ising machines provide a promising approach to solve complex optimization problems and hence are of broad interest in physics society. This paper constructs a nonlinear optical Ising machine with spatial light modulators to find distinct phase ...
