Based on his clinical observations the "red dot sign" and hyperemic flare, Behan has advocated the superior vascularity of the island flap design for at least 2 decades. The aim of this study was to determine whether (1) surgical islanding of a flap alters the vascularity or blood supply of the flap and (2) these changes in blood supply explain Behan's

Diurnal and seasonal patterns of global urban dry islands
Urban heat islands (UHIs) are a widely studied phenomenon, while research on urban-rural differences in humidity, the so called urban dry or moisture islands (UDIs, UMIs), is less common and a large-scale quantification of the seasonal and diurnal ...

Effect of Sampietrini Pavers on Urban Heat Islands [PDF]
Cool pavements are reflective and/or permeable pavements that improve microclimate of urban areas where heat islands cause discomfort to citizens. Stone pavements lower surface temperatures and reduce the amount of heat absorbed. This study assessed, using ENVI-met 4.3 LITE software, how air temperature and predicted mean vote depend on physical ...

Modeling lake trophic state: a random forest approach
Productivity of lentic ecosystems is well studied, and it is widely accepted that as nutrient inputs increase, productivity increases and lakes transition from lower trophic state (e.g., oligotrophic) to higher trophic states (e.g., eutrophic).

The D-linking effect on extraction from islands and non-islands [PDF]

One influential account of this attributes the effect to working memory: the D-linked filler is easier to retrieve at the site of the gap and this leads to the amelioration in acceptability.

Island biogeography is not a single‐variable discipline: the small island effect debate [PDF]
AbstractIn some island systems, an ‘anomalous’ feature of species richness on smaller islands, in comparison with larger ones, has been observed. This has been described as the small island effect (SIE). The precise meaning of the term remains unresolved, as does the explanation for the phenomenon and even whether it exists.

Island mass effect in the Marquesas Islands: Time variation [PDF]
Chlorophyll a in the Marquesas islands has been analyzed for the period 1997–2002 as well as simultaneous sea surface height anomaly, sea surface temperature, wind and rainfall. For the first time, the seasonality of phytoplankton blooms is shown around the Marquesas Islands.
