Co-Operation in Island Biogeography
2000In this chapter I discuss another example of co-operation of holistic and reductionistic research programmes in ecology.1 The example concerns some developments in island biogeography, a branch of ecology dealing with the distribution and abundance of species on islands.

Rotated Island Graft Operation for Pterygium
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1926This operation isolates the bulk of the pterygium by four incisions. Sutures are introduced in such a way as when tightened to rotate the isolated square 90 degrees. It is fixed in position with the help of additional sutures if needed. The operation is applicable only to exceptionally severe cases, which may have not been corrected by other operations.

Trackless Trolley Operation In Rhode Island
Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1949This paper attempts to set forth the knowledge gained in operating a growing trackless trolley system over a period of 17 years. It in no way is intended to prove that the trolley coach is a cure-all for transit ills. Unbiased transit experts recognize the need for all types of vehicles in the industry: ``A place for every vehicle-every vehicle in its ...

Research Operations on Jan Mayen Island
2004The remoteness of Jan Mayen Island makes it rather inaccessible for scientists and the ruling arctic conditions require logistics that secure conditions for field research. The scope of research interests ranges from Global climate and hemispheric meteorology, seabed tectonics and volcanology, and geophysics of the World Ocean and the proximal Nordic ...

Research Operations in Remote Arctic Islands
2004Conducting research in the remote and inaccessible parts of the Globe often demands specific logistical actions. Long-term research programmes are thus usually carried out by permanent research teams working in particular stations. The working conditions under such circumstances frequently fall short of the standards set for the average research ...
