Adult Sex Ratio as a Demographic Feedback Linking Mating Systems, Parental Care, and Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Breeding systems are some of the most diverse social behavior, and our team is investigation the evolutionary causes of this diversity. This review summarises our research carried out at the University of Bath. We argue that demographic components of wild populations, especially the adult sex ratio, plays a key role driving breeding system variation ...

Magnetic field effects on the ISM structure and galactic outflows

open access: yes, 2018
The role of magnetic fields in the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) is explored using magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations that include energy injection by supernova (SN) explosions and allow for dynamo action. Apart from providing additional pressure support of the gas layer, magnetic fields reduce the density contrast between the warm and hot ...

Data‐Driven Modeling of Composition–Processing–Microstructure Relations for Recycled Aluminum Cast Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Interpretable machine learning reveals how composition and processing govern the formation and microstructural burden of Fe‐rich intermetallic compounds in recycled Al–Si–Fe–Mn alloys. By separating morphology selection from morphology‐conditioned burden partitioning, this framework shows that identical Fe contents can yield different intermetallic ...

A Worm‐Inspired Origami Robot with Multimodal Locomotion for Adaptive Mobility in Complex Pipeline Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An origami worm‐inspired robot achieves multimodal locomotion in confined pipelines through mechatronic integration that embeds actuation, control, and communication within each origami module. Large, reversible configuration and dimensional changes enable 25 gaits synthesized by a unified framework across peristaltic, inchworm, and wheel‐rolling modes

An Excursion-Set Model for the Structure of GMCs and the ISM

open access: yes, 2011
The ISM is governed by supersonic turbulence on a range of scales. We use this to develop a rigorous excursion-set model for the formation and time evolution of dense gas structures (GMCs, massive clumps, and cores). Supersonic turbulence drives the density distribution to a lognormal with dispersion increasing with Mach number; we generalize this to ...

Pulsar Studies of Tiny-Scale Structure in the Neutral ISM

open access: yes, 2007
We describe the use of pulsars to study small-scale neutral structure in the interstellar medium (ISM). Because pulsars are high velocity objects, the pulsar-Earth line of sight sweeps rapidly across the ISM. Multiepoch measurements of pulsar interstellar spectral line spectra therefore probe ISM structures on AU scales.

Photonic‐Enabled Energy‐Efficient Transparent Neuromorphic Computing Devices: A Review

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Transparent photonic neuromorphic computing devices merge optics and brain‐inspired computing to overcome von Neumann bottlenecks with ultrafast, low‐energy processing. By exploiting transparent oxides, 2D materials, phase‐change materials, and hybrid heterostructures, these platforms enable photonic synapses, memory, and logic for see‐through edge ...

How Does Star Formation Affect the Large Scale Structure of the ISM? [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1996
Nearly all the star formation in the Milky Way and nearby spiral galaxies occurs in the giant molecular clouds (GMC). Inside the GMC's the units of star formation are the high density (≥ 103cm–3) and high mass (≥ 103M⊙) clumps (Blitz, 1991). Once a GMC is “infected” by star formation many clumps form stars producing a star forming region. The formation
