Rediscovering two Isoetes species in the Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado after 167 years [PDF]
Isoetes amazonica and I. gardneriana were the first two species of the genus to be collected from Brazil. Isoetes amazonica was gathered by Richard Spruce in the Amazon basin near Santarém in the state of Pará in 1850.

Anatomical studies of Brazilian Amazonian Isoëtes species: inferences on habitat adaptation
Isoëtes is a cosmopolitan genus of aquatic lycophytes, containing more than 200 species. In Brazil, the genus comprises 29 species, with three occurring in Pará state, Amazon. Isoëtes cangae and I.

Causes of delayed angiosperm diversification: The photosynthetic revolution, increased opportunity costs of anti-herbivore defenses, selection for qualitative toxins, and acceleration of plant-herbivore coevolution. [PDF]
Abstract Why did it take so long for angiosperms to diversify after they arose? Here I consider the indirect but potentially crucial impact of the “photosynthetic revolution” on plant–herbivore coevolution. Increased vein density in fossil leaves implies a doubling in photosynthesis 125–100 million years ago.

A novel single-cell NAD-ME C4 subtype integrated with CAM and bicarbonate use in an aquatic plant. [PDF]
Summary Many plants maximize photosynthesis by using a CO2‐concentrating mechanism (CCM). Based on physiology, the freshwater plant Ottelia alismoides has three CCMs: C4 metabolism (NAD‐malic enzyme (NAD‐ME) subtype) and bicarbonate‐use during the day plus crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) at night and lacks Kranz anatomy. Here, we combined a range of

The genetic diversity and population structure of two endemic Amazonian quillwort (Isoetes L.) species [PDF]
Background Two endemic lycophyte species Isoetes cangae and Isoetes serracarajensis have been recently described in the State of Pará in the Amazon forest located in northern Brazil. Isoetes L. has survived through three mass extinctions.

Isoetes pedersenii, a new species from Southern South America
The name Isoetes pedersenii H.P. Fuchs (Lycophyta), a species known only from the Mburucuyá National Park, Corrientes, Argentina, is validated. Observations were carried out on herbarium material with stereoscopic, light and scanning electron microscopes.

The southernmost distribution range of Isoetes panamensis Maxon & C.V. Morton (Lycopodiopsida, Isoetaceae) in the relicts of the Cerrado in southern Brazil [PDF]
Establishing the geographical distribution limits of species may provide not only data to understand their range of adaptation to conservation proposals but also records of the dynamics in the vegetation across the time.
