Isotonic and hypertonic crystalloid solutions in the critically ill

Best Practice & Research Clinical Anaesthesiology, 2009
Disorders of fluid and electrolyte balance in the critically ill are volume-related, compositional, or both. Targeting 'normal' values for plasma volume, osmolality and electrolytes might not be optimal in conditions as diverse as intracranial trauma/haemorrhage, hepatic encephalopathy, abdominal hypertension, or major surgery, because a hyperosmolar ...

Isotonic vs Isosmotic Solutions A Clarification of Terms

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1968
To the Editor:— The plasma membrane of the biological cell serves the useful purpose of separating the cellular fluid from the cell's environment. By selective permeability, facilitated diffusion, and active transport, the living cell is able to maintain the composition of its fluid quite constant and distinct from the surrounding fluid.

Isotone solutions of parametric linear complementarity problems

Mathematical Programming, 1977
The parametric linear complementarity problem is given by the conditions:q + αp + Mz ⩾ 0,α ⩾ 0,z ⩾ 0,z T (q + αp + Mz) = 0. Under the assumption thatM is a P-matrix, Cottle proved that the solution mapz(α) of the above problem is montonically nondecreasing in the parameterα for every nonnegativeq and everyp if and only ifM is a Minkowski matrix.

Rapid Intraoperative Distension Using Isotonic Saline Solution

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1995
Rapid intraoperative expansion can provide a solution to certain losses of cutaneous substance. In some cases where this method proves useful, I have been able to obtain interesting results by using distension with saline. I would like to show the importance of this operating technique, as well as its limits and advantages.
