Selected trace and minor elements in sediments of Itaipu dam reservoir
Czechoslovak Journal of Physics, 2003The X-ray fluorescence analysis of some minor and trace elements in sediments of Itaipu Dam reservoir was used for a study of geochemical processes and the evolution and history of a water body, which characterise the geological history as well as the present changes in the area. Inter alia good correlation with the Ti and incompatible elements content

Retrospective study of malaria prevalence and Anopheles genus in the area of influence of the binational Itaipu reservoir [PDF]
The importance of hydroelectric dams beside the human interchange in the maintenance of malarious foci and the occurrence of the Anopheles genus on the Binational Itaipu Reservoir were the main points of this retrospective study. Data were collected from existing registrations at National, State and Municipal Health Departments and literature ...

The sedimentation of seston has important ecological roles in aquatic ecosystems, especially in reservoirs where it leads to prominent longitudinal zonation in the main axis. We investigated the patterns of settling fluxes of total organic and inorganic seston, phosphorus and nitrogen in the main body of a large (1,350 km 2 ), deep (170 m close to the ...

Aquatic macrophyte community distribution along the eastern shoreline of the Itaipu Reservoir (one of the South America’s largest impoundments) is described in relation to limnological and sedimentological factors. The central body of the reservoir is mesotrophic, while the arms (flooded influent river valleys) along the eastern shore may be oligo ...

Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix), (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil [PDF]
Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) was determined. Data were collected from December 1983 to November 1984 and from April 1997 to March 1998 in the Itaipu Reservoir. To evaluate reading consistency, it was analyzed the coefficient of variation of the total length for each annulus observed in the ...

Studies on water surface temperature (WST) from thermal infrared remote sensing are still incipient in Brazil, and for many water resources, they do not exist. Many algorithms have been developed to estimate surface temperature in satellite images. There are also many difficulties in implementing these algorithms due to their complexity, especially in ...

Larval development of Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel) (Perciformes, Sciaenidae) of Itaipu reservoir (Paraná river, Brazil) [PDF]
The aim of the present study was to characterize the larval development of Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840) morphometrically, collected at Itaipu reservoir from March 1988 to April 1990. It was obtained the samples monthly, with a conic-cylindrical plankton net with 0.5mm mesh. The morphological description of the larvae of P.

Assessment of the environmental factors that control species richness (S) is a central issue in ecology. In this study, aquatic macrophyte S was estimated in 235 sampling sites distributed in 8 arms of a large (1350 km2) subtropical reservoir (Itaipu Reservoir, Brazil).

We analyzed the ontogenetic shifts in digestive tract morphology and diets of the young of Iheringichthys labrosus, Hypophthalmus edentatus and Plagioscion squamosissimus, sampled in the Itaipu Reservoir, Brazil-Paraguay. We described the dental structures, the gill rakers and the digestive tract, and analyzed the diet of the young fish.
