An Alignment-Free Approach for Eukaryotic ITS2 Annotation and Phylogenetic Inference
The ITS2 gene class shows a high sequence divergence among its members that have complicated its annotation and its use for reconstructing phylogenies at a higher taxonomical level (beyond species and genus). Several alignment strategies have been implemented to improve the ITS2 annotation quality and its use for phylogenetic inferences.

Mesophotic reefs are often considered climate refuges, yet experimental thermal‐stress reveals species‐dependent vulnerability. Skeletal optics, energy reserves, and light environment determine bleaching severity. A depth‐generalist coral resisted stress while the mesophotic specialist bleached severely.

Compensatory base changes (CBCs) in internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) rDNA secondary structures correlate with Ernst Mayr's biological species concept. Abstract Ecological theory predicts that the high local diversity observed in plant communities can be maintained by soilborne pathogens and allelopathic autotoxicity, both of which trigger negative conspecific density dependence (CDD).
