What can we see with IVIM MRI?

open access: yesNeuroImage, 2019
Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) refers to translational movements which within a given voxel and during the measurement time present a distribution of speeds in orientation and/or amplitude. The IVIM concept has been used to estimate perfusion in tissues as blood flow in randomly oriented capillaries mimics a pseudo-diffusion process.

Comparison of perfusion signal acquired by arterial spin labeling–prepared intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) MRI and conventional IVIM MRI to unravel the origin of the IVIM signal

Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, 2017
PurposeApplications of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging in the brain are scarce, whereas it has been successfully applied in other organs with promising results. To better understand the cerebral IVIM signal, the diffusion properties of the arterial blood flow within different parts of the cerebral vascular tree (i.e., different generations ...

Reproducibility of IVIM Quantification Across Diffusion Gradient Waveforms using Pseudo-Diffusion and Physical IVIM Signal Models

ISMRM Annual Meeting, 2023
The intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) DWI signal has been shown to depend on both b-value and the first motion moment (M1). However, traditional pseudo-diffusion IVIM signal models only include b-value dependence. In this work, monopolar and 2D (b-M1) IVIM acquisitions were acquired using diffusion gradient waveforms with different maximum amplitudes

Mathematically constrained intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM)

ISMRM Annual Meeting, 2023
Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) provides a method of mapping slow and fast diffusion using a two-exponential model. Whilst this method has been applied in acute stroke, brain cancer and muscle, for example, it does have challenges. These include how to best fit the three model parameters which on top of the two diffusion coefficients includes the ...

Imaging the Ischemic Penumbra with IVIM

ISMRM Annual Meeting
Motivation: Non-contrast accurate simultaneous perfusion diffusion could improve study of ischemic penumbra development in pre-clinical stroke research of novel therapeutics. Goal(s): Examine intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) perfusion and diffusion compared to local-AIF DSC in acute stroke with varying compensatory collateral supply Approach: Pre ...

Model-based reconstruction of IVIM-DTI in skeletal muscle: Improving IVIM-DTI parameter map quality in low-perfused tissues

ISMRM Annual Meeting, 2023
IVIM and DTI techniques are both sensitive to a variety of muscle disorders. Their combination can give a more complete description of ordered diffusion processes and perfusion. Model-based reconstruction can overcome many short-comings of image-based fitting such as Rician noise bias or low SNR.

What can be reliably measured in IVIM model: exploring the collinearity in IVIM parameter fitting.

ISMRM Annual Meeting
Motivation: Estimating IVIM diffusion MRI (dMRI) parameters through non-linear fitting is challenging due to the inherent ill-posed mathematical problem, causing large uncertainty and poor reproducibility. Goal(s): Understand IVIM-dMRI model properties and derive a more reliable metric than individual IVIM parameters.

IVIM improves preoperative assessment of microvascular invasion in HCC

European Radiology, 2019
To prospectively evaluate the potential role of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and conventional radiologic features for preoperative prediction of microvascular invasion (MVI) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Institutional review board approval and written informed consent were obtained for this study.

IVIM perfusion fraction is prognostic for survival in brain glioma

Clinical Neuroradiology, 2016
The interest in measuring brain perfusion with intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) MRI has significantly increased in the last 3 years. Our aim was to evaluate the prognostic value for survival of intravoxel incoherent motion perfusion fraction in patients with gliomas, and compare it to dynamic susceptibility contrast relative cerebral blood volume ...
