1975年にSCIの最終巻として出版されて以来、JCRは雑誌単位の多角的な引用分析リポートとして高く評価されてきた。1989年からはMicrofiche版となったが、1994年にはCD-ROM版が登場し、さらに使いやすく便利になった。その基本的な雑誌ランキング表は二つの総合計実数と三つの統計指数で構成されている。年間総被引用回数、年間全論文数、文献引用影響率、最新文献指数、被引用半減期である。この中、文献引用影響率と最新文献指数は特に重要で、雑誌の基本的評価や応用分析に利用されるのはもちろん、購読雑誌決定の基準としても使われるようになった。
